The fact is that the officer's immediate reaction being to just shoot the dog when it wasn't showing any signs of aggression or dangerous behavior is negligent. They could've easily released the totally non-violent prisoner from his handcuffs and told him to detain his dog in the car instead of just choosing to shoot it.

I don't understand the hate on the cops. Could they have tried to restrain it? Yeah, they could've but it's a Rottweiler that's getting aggressive because it sees it's owner is being possibly being harmed. Put yourselves in their shoes. When a 200 pound dog is jumping on you and could possibly bite you, you might act irrational and shoot the thing. Could they have approached this situation better? Yes, but they didn't taze it or try and hold it down(Which probably would've resulted in it biting them). There were better solutions to this, but thats the approach they took. The owner should've been smarter and not put himself in that situation in the first place as well. I'm still curious as to what they were arresting him for in the first place, i'm assuming they were trying to keep him from entering the scene but he wouldn't listen to the warnings so they saw fit to restrain him until the event was over.
 
Rottweilers aren't a medium sized dog, they're a very large one with a stereotype of being overly aggressive, similar to that of a pitbull.

...and it was awesome. This was a real spur of the moment thing. I happened to be working in Silver Spring, MD and noticed GT was in DC. Seeing as I was no more than 5 mins from the metro and a metro ride into DC was no more than 20 mins I thought "why the hell not?" So we met up in Union station, and walked around the mall and ended up in the air and space museum.
