Democratic and Republican Nominations

Recommended Posts

I think you guys are writing off trump a little hastily. There seems to be a surprisingly large amount of people who genuinely want him to become president. I'm voting for Sanders if he gets the nomination, but if its Hillary v Trump I'll admit I would be tempted to vote for Trump as a 'not Hillary' vote essentially.

Like Canada and basically every other major US ally.

Canada isn't a socialist society homie. I mean parts of it are controlled by the government (healthcare) but that's about it.

It might go more towards it now that Trudeau is in office but I doubt it.

It's very much a capitalist society, just like the rest of the world.

Democratic socialism= capitalism with government regulation and social programs. So Canada is the technically democratic socialist. Most extreme case is Scandinavia. Don't confuse democratic and standard socialism they aren't the same thing

Again Canada does not have a democratic socialist government at the moment. Sure we have some social programs but not a lot.

The closest party to a socialist would be the NDP (New Democratic Party) but they aren't in power anymore and haven't been for a while now.

Dosent need to have a party in power for it to have the basic hallmarks of a system. Does Canada have regulated capitalism and social programs ? If yes then technically it could be described as democratic socialist if not entirely. Like I said Scandinavia is the most extreme example

Maybe your view is a bit skewed.

Canada helps out its poor just as much as the US do.

Canada is extremely similar to the US besides universal healthcare which is still payed for in taxes (mind you a significantly less amount on average, compared to health insurance).

Canada can't be a democratic socialist without a proper voting system. Ours is just as fucked as the States.

Having said all this, I do like Bernie Sanders the most out of every candidate. He speaks to my values and concerns. I don't feel that the others really do. Living in Canada, it is extremely important to us who you guys vote for so we're very invested in this upcoming election.

I personally believe that Bernie Sanders will edge the competition on the democratic side, and Ted Cruz will manage to pull it out on the republican side.

You're not even correct on the definition of democratic socialism. It isn't a capitalist system with various social safety nets and programs. That's just a mixed economy. Democratic socialism is exactly what it sounds like, a socialist economic system that is headed by a government with democratic ideals. The adjective democratic is just used as a distinction from traditional Marxist socialism. Pretty sure the phrase you're looking for is social democracy, which advocates using social programs such as welfare to promote social justice within a capitalist society

Bernie has good values and good ideals and would make for a decent president if it weren't for his logic, as all the "free stuff" he talks about isn't free and would cost about 13-14 trillion dollars. Hillary doesn't really need to be explained, she is just generally a bad choice and many are suprised she hasn't been imprisoned yet. Unfortunately, she will probably win the Democratic side of the debate. On the republican side, I'd probably go with Rubio rather than Carson or Cruz simply because their views are either too proactive or not proactive enough. Trump is cancer, simply put, and I don't know enough about the other candidates to say anything about them.

If you looked at his policies the 13 to 14 trillion is actually less money than would be paid on healthcare and the college and infrastructure programs would be an investment that generates far more money.  He saves america much more money than he spends

I realize this but its effect is somewhat iffy. Don't misunderstand, though, as I would prefer him over hillary or trump anyday

His spending proposals are done in every major western country besides the US and they are widely popular and successful. I don't see how anyone that does research can ever question the good they'd do

Well today the trail to the election begins in Iowa, it really is critical for Bernie to win if he wants a chance at Washington, I can't see him winning the majority of the South. I know for sure that my state, VA, will probably not be a Bernie state.

It turns out money decides elections after all.

If they did just split the 6 delegates in half (rather than a coin toss):

“Sanders would have finished at 698.49 delegates to Clinton’s 696.57.”

Clinton had a 1.56% chance of winning all 6 delegates in a row lol. Damn, that’s lucky.

Also how is this voting system still a thing in 2016?! There's so much room for error.

I don't think you know anything about your state.

Methinks everyone in congress should have to watch CGPGrey's video on the Single Transferable Voting (STV) system.

I doubt, however, that we will ever adopt such a system because it would invariably kill both the Democratic and Republican parties. (which wouldn't be a bad thing imo)

I agree -- I like his thoughts and videos on the matter. The First Past The Post Video is good too.

Canada's new Democratic Institutions Minister Maryam Monsef says we can do better as well. Our new PM ran on electoral reform too.
