Pretty much this:

He's pretty much in space so there's no air to slow him down or create sound waves when he does break the sound barrier.

Except he's not completely in space, and there is still atmosphere from where he's jumping, it's just very very thin so air resistance is limited allowing him to continue accelerating. Also, if he does break the sound barrier, the shock waves produced will be less than an object breaking it in full atmosphere conditions (although there will still be shock waves).
