The massive decrease in any scientific development during the middle/dark ages was a result of the massive decentralization of power that came following the demise of the Roman Empire. The stability brought with the Roman Empire provided as close to perfect as conditions at the time could be for scientific advancement. It kept barbarians at bay, it maintained roads that allowed ideas to travel, and it had a common language which allowed ideas from Asia Minor to go all the way to England. After its collapse all of that just disappeared. There was no centralization of power, there was no government which could control everything and keep the peace. It was decentralized mess and as a result "science" and "progress" kind of flatlined. It was this decentralization which destroyed the conditions which had in the past allowed "science" and "progress" to occur. Without it, things didn't move as quickly.
The great irony of you stipulating that for hundreds of years Christianity threw a blanket of ignorance over Western Civilization is that it did quite the opposite. Throughout the Dark/Middle ages (they're kind of the same thing) the Roman Catholic Church was the single largest proponent of progress throughout the whole of Christendom (aka Europe). The Catholic Church became the closest thing to a new centralizing authority which would exist in Europe during those times, since everybody was answerable to the pope no matter what. It established numerous parish schools all over Europe, educating the masses, or at least those who wanted education. Monasteries copied manuscripts and preserved them, many of them dating from antiquity. Monks kept literacy alive in Europe. In addition, the Church created Latin as the lingua franca for Europe. This allowed much more dialogue between different peoples and led to undoubtedly more prosperity. The first universities in Europe came out of cathedral schools where bishops would teach all those who wanted education about whatever.
Another thing which I would like to point out is that you admit that in the Islamic world, advancement was quite alive during "the dark ages". Yet, you claim that religion as a whole has only held man back form achieving its potential glory. Do you mean that specifically Christianity is bad, and that Islam is totally okay?
I have no idea what you're talking about with this "Christianity called for the destruction of all previously discovered scientific ideals" thing. Can you give me a source on this?

People with money should be able to do what they want and believe whatever they want to believe in.
It's not fucking stupid if it's something that helps you get by in everyday life imho. You can argue that believing in religion is like believing in something that doesn't exist, but hey if believing in in something that doesn't exist helps you get by everyday in life and you'd be worse without it - then more power to you.

So I've just recently realized that like half of this clan is Canadian, and the other half is American. As such, it is only fitting that we have an international friendship thread.
Everybody pick someone from the other country and say something nice about them.
