RE: Scam Alert

On Wednesday, February 15, 2017, an 18 year old male WSU student reported that he received a telephone call from an unknown male who claimed to be an FBI Agent. The "agent" claimed he was looking into legal fees of a "missed Education document # 8863". The "agent" stated that an arrest warrant had been issued for the student, due to $4,900.00 in fees being owed.

The student then purchased a Target Gift Card in the amount of $1,700.00 and was directed to provide that Gift Card account number to the caller to clear the "arrest warrant" that had been issued. The student did as he was instructed. The next day, he realized he had been the victim of a scam. The phone number that the "FBI agent" had called from was a "spoofed" phone number for the Traverse City, Michigan FBI office.

The WSU community is reminded that no federal government agency or local, state or federal law enforcement agency will ever contact you by phone on an official business/criminal investigation matter - especially when they are alleging that you have committed a crime, but can "buy your way" out of an arrest warrant or other penalty.

All legitimate official business with local, state and federal law enforcement agencies is either conducted in person (a law enforcement officer or agent comes to your door) or you receive a letter (on that agencies letterhead) in the U.S. mail.

If you ever receive an official sounding telephone call, from someone claiming to be with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the federal Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) or anyone else claiming to be investigating you - simply HANG UP!.

They may sound official, but they are not. Just hang up. You should then call that agency, using a phone number you have verified and know to be legitimate. Then, advise that agency that you received a phone call, from someone representing to be from that agency, and alleging you are involved in a criminal investigation and are responsible for a monetary fine

Crooks use clever schemes to defraud millions of people every year. They often combine sophisticated technology with age-old tricks to get people to send money or give out personal information. They add new twists to old schemes and pressure people to make important decisions on the spot. One thing that never changes: they follow the headlines — and the money.

The Federal Trade Commission has a website (ftc.gov) that was established to help protect consumers - including some of the popular scams that have and are being used to scam people out of their money.

I have no clue, it must be a foreign student. I know it was in the computer science field so there's a 99% chance that it was an Indian student who probably doesn't know English or anything else tbh

The fact the "FBI agent" wanted a fucking Target gift card should have been a dead giveaway.

Still though, poor kid.

Poor kid? Unless the kid had autism there is no way one should sympathize with him. I know elderly with more brains not to get scammed like this.

You don't have to be smart to have your mommy and daddy (or federal loans) pay for your schooling.

Everyone talking shit about the kid but honestly it probably was a foreign student paranoid about all the anti immigration stuff going on and worried about being in legal trouble. Scams like this often target people that have weaker language skills and less of a grasp of US law

I mean some of  the foreign students might come from countries where police shakedowns similar to this are relatively common
