@Sean He did give a power supply in his parts list, and honestly you can fit almost anything in a mid tower. It's a tight fit... I had a smaller mid tower before getting a full tower, and my full sized card was probably less than an inch of clearance.

@Tacky If you don't want to do a full build, you could start with just getting an SSD. You won't regret that purchase at all. Then you can think about if you want to do a full upgrade... The bad thing about upgrading right now, is there's not really any low-end options giving you the option to upgrade in the future. Because there's new sockets with CPUs, DDR4 ram, etc. you won't be able to say "Oh I'm just going to upgrade this one part for now". You'll have to do a full upgrade when you decide to replace one part.

I had a mid atx tower that could not fit a 970, had to upgrade to a larger case.

Go big or go home, full size regulate heat great and are easy to build in.

Most people never even upgrade their builds besides Graphics; The CPU/Mobo are practically married no separation; RAM, and Storage usually get added not replaced.  I do kinda agree with you, with DDR4 coming around the corner it would suck to be stuck with DDR3.  I was stuck with DDR2 back when DDR3 came out and DDR2 sticks were hundreds of dollars for 2GB while 8GB of DDR3 was like $80 (just had to full upgrade)

I realize people often do not do full upgrades, but when new sockets start coming out when one part goes bad or you really want to upgrade, you're forced to upgrade the rest. As of right now if he upgrades to what was suggested, he won't be able to upgrade his ram, or cpu (which can bottle neck you just as much as a GPU can), or move on to an m2 SSD. I'd much rather see him get a new mobo, i5 6600k, ddr4 ram, 970, and probably even an ssd for what he has left, then spending the money on something he can't upgrade. (Roughly 700 for what I listed, another 100-150 for an SSD puts him right at his top price range).

@Tacky

Here ya go.

http://pcpartpicker.com/list/dMxJ7h

I left out a case because so much of this is aesthics, if you prefer a color, leds, etc. Here's a few (If you don't like any just go to pcpartpicker, select full size tower, and 5 star rating.. then browse until you find one)...

http://pcpartpicker.com/product/y8h9TW/phanteks-case-phes614pwt

http://pcpartpicker.com/product/z6W9TW/nzxt-case-phan002or

http://pcpartpicker.com/product/HPCwrH/inwin-case-grone

http://pcpartpicker.com/product/82h9TW/nzxt-case-cap630wg1

http://pcpartpicker.com/product/nPphP6/thermaltake-case-vn10006w2n

http://pcpartpicker.com/product/wLGkcf/inwin-case-gronegray

You could drop down to a 970, get a higher speed ram, or swap out whatever you feel you don't like.

As per moose above, I agree with all the parts, but a 980 is shit for the money compared to a 980Ti.

I say either drop down to a 970 and upgrade futher somewhere else, or wait for the 480 to come out, which will maximize your budget even further.

1070 is coming out in a week or so, but I'd go with the cheaper 970 and push for a higher wattage PSU for longevity, maybe an 850P2, since the 1000W seems to have gone up in price again. Other than that, solid choices

Idk why I totally forgot about the 1070.. I only cared about the release of the 1080 which was out of his price range lol.... I would hold off and get a 1070 as well @Tacky. Thanks for the reminder rofl :)
