The new server room

Recommended Posts

heres how the new server room is looking. i just put a gable mount fan in the ceiling and cut the drywall to install some brush wall mounts. im putting a 3 jack cat6 wallmount next to the lower server to keep the cables tidy.

linksys e3000 - dd-wrt. ps3, 5.1ch surround. installed a 4 port cat6 jack, the hdmi jack and a 5.1ch surround panel to connect the tv in the LR to the surround receiver.

i typed a bunch of shit and my 1yo hit the back button.. wtf.

took 40 hours across some time. i have no idea on cost.. i ran the speakers, venting, hdmi and cat6 before drywall was up for the most part. the 4port next to the receiver and 3 port i need to install are the only ones that are going in after drywall.  the 3 port will suck, i have to drill through studs and cut a ton of drywall. i would say in all i spent maybe 1500$ for everything  in the room to include cabling and enclosures.

the server has dual xeon E31220's, 4 cores each, hyperthreading disabled, 64G ram, 3 1G nics, running ESXi 5.5 enterprise

hosted services are

  1. Server 2012R2 DC running dhcp, dns, windows deployment services, and KMS
  2. Server 2012R2 WSUS (im limited to 300G/mo so this saves me a ton of bw )
  3. CentOS 6 Open Media Vault, this is my nas. Has 10TB of SATA6 dedicated to it and 1TB of SSD space. This has our desktops/mydocuments on it so our files exist on whatever pc we logon to in the house. it also has about 4TB of movies/tv shows/music. if we buy something, i convert to mp4/mp3 and put the original in storage. we use DLNA to stream it to vlc, receiver, tv, ps3, etc. I also have some backups and shit on there.
  4. CentOS 6 Asterisk server, this runs all the phones, voicemail, fax (we use hylafax for desktop faxing) and intercoms in the house
  5. CentOS 6 Radius server, this provides WPA2 Enterprise for wireless autnentication
  6. CentOS 6 test server, this runs my SRCDS instance. i test any changes i make for SG here before implementing. This is also why the pimp race caused so many probs. i compiled it against my server which was fully updated and SGs was not so the hooks i called were fucking stuff up and thorgot had to recompile it.
  7. Windows 8.1 trash server, this is for porn and anything that might have a virus in it.

the AP on the ceiling is a linksys e3000 running some variant of dd-wrt, it connects to a DSL modem with a 5M link. In the enclosure is a cisco l3 switch connected to the business class cable modem with a 50/20 SLA connection. obviously the cable is primary, dsl is a backup connection.  the receiver is a pioneer vsx822 which supports DLNA and other neat things, the ps3 is not a ps4 :(, the tux painting was my sister's present to me like 10 yrs ago i think she was 13 or something. not shown is a meraki teleworker which i use to vpn in a voip phone and laptop to work because i work from the hizzy 3 days a week.

hopefully that answers all the questions. its a fun thing to do and if you get a chance to, build your house and do cabling work before drywall goes up. its soo much easier/cheaper. also, whereever you put your wiring closet, ensure you have adequate ventilation. do not vent outside unless you use a unidirectional exhaust, and even in this case you will have a higher heating/cooling bill because of it. best to vent it to a larger room.

Any kind of ventilation going in there to keep things cool? What cisco switch did you get? I just picked up an old catalyst 2950 that a client was getting rid of.. isn't L3, but it's something to finally practice on.

i have a gable fan with 1 way exhaust run into the garage.

it's a Cisco 500x (small business edition)  i have an ASR1001, a cisco 4900m, and a 3750x that i was going to use for my CCIE lab, but my wife told me they were too loud :(  the army donated them to me as a departure gift (really they forgot i had them)

but what does the PS3 do?

is that what hosts all of sG's gameservers?

seems pretty accurate to me

my wife's tv isn't a smart tv and i sold mine; so we use the ps3 as our netflix/dlna/bluray player (coincidentally, i believe the ps3 is still the top rated blu-ray player)

I host sG servers on my WII

<br />Gimme job plz

send resume
