Computer booting problems [Advice?]

Recommended Posts

Alright so getting some issues and thought this place wouldn't be the worst to ask for help.  Anyways, started up my computer this morning to find the boot stalling on the motherboard screen (Asus, etc.  Press delete to go into bios).  Pressed delete to try to go into bios. No luck.  Turned it off and tried taking out each of the hard drives one at a time while booting, no difference.  Then replugged in the hdds, took out the ram.  Booted the computer back up and screen booted completely black.  So at this point I am thinking either the ram is bad or the video card.  I put the ram back in and tried taking out the video card and using the native motherboard graphics.  Still black.  Sooo, not really sure what to do at this point. Help me syndickic gaymers you are my only hope.

I don't know if the same case will apply to you, but I had something like this. I took out one ram stick and started the computer, then restarted with both.

put ram back in. if you have onboard video leave video card unplugged. find out how to reset your bios. if you can't figure it out find the battery which looks like a "coin"/watch battery and pop that sucker out. turn the computer on/off a couple times. unplug it fully from the wall. smash the power button several more times. wait a couple hours. put battery back in. start computer. hopefully it loads past bios.

if you have access to another computer make a live cd/usb with memtest86+ on it  and test your mem before starting to put components back in one by one. hirens bootcd is a good tool to get and will have memtest on it.

What centran said and just to add, do you hear and post beeps when booting? Should give you a series of small morse code style beeps indicating an error such as ram or whatnot.

Also; if you can't get into bios this sometimes points to motherboard failure. Have you tried connecting your kb/m to front USB ports, just to ensure that the i/o ports are just not going kebunk?

Try clearing the BIOS by removing the CMOS battery (Looks like a watch battery) for a moment, and stick it back in.. it's worth a try.

Removing all components that you can. Do you have anything else in the PCI slots? Video Card is a given, take that out and use onboard. Sound card can be removed, essentially all you need is your ram and your boot drive.

Alright, popped the ram back in and took out the cmos battery.  Restarted a couple of times (did it by itself), then unplugged pressed the power button a couple of times. (saw that it powered up for a split second and turned off).  Waiting a couple hours and will update status. Also thank you everyone who has given me input on how to fix this, it is appreciated.

Edit: 1. Okay so I didn't wait "hours" but yeah computer started up got a screen that showed my mobo. cpu (its speed type etc.) HOWEVER, i noticed my ram was off.
For my memory it stated the "Total Memory: 8192 MB". This cannot be true since I have a 16 gigs of ram. So I believe the ram is the issue here.  HDDs are detected and etc.

Edit: 2. Popped out the bad stick of ram, added in some new pieces and works perfectly and detects the new amount pefectly.  Works fine for now. Thanks everyone.

Most manufacturers have lifetime warranty for memory, so yay!

If both sticks were purchased as a kit, they  may request that you return both (2x, 3x, 4x, etc. kits are usually pre-binned and tested for compatibility) so your replacement set works right out of the box.

Also, try and request an advance RMA with some BS excuse of "I need it for school/work/porn and can't afford any downtime due to projects/assignments." Especially with it being finals season, they shouldn't give too much hassle in getting that put in place. :D

Wait should I if my new one is at a significantly higher frequency? The old ram was at 1333 whereas the new one is at 2133 (Cas 10, whatever that means)

Sure, if your motherboard can support it.

Typically you want all of your RAM running at the same frequency and timings (ideally they are at least the same make/model). Check to see if your motherboard/cpu even support 2133 because there's a chance that it doesn't, and is capped at something like 1333 anyway.

If you bought a new kit of RAM the first bit isn't an issue, but the second might be depending on your hardware.

No it is, I checked before I got them (Z87-pro mobo/i4770k cpu).  I am just wondering whether or not frequency makes a huge difference in performance.

There isn't much of a performance increase in gaming with that difference in frequency (~1 fps).
