Easy way to keep track of media files - Updated!

Recommended Posts

So, to go along with my other thread:  http://www.joinsg.net/topic/63256-best-way-to-setup-hdds-and-ssds/

I'm looking for a way to keep my media library organized, without renaming anything.

It's mainly TV Shows, but there are lots of movies, and some music, too.

What I guess I am looking for is some type of GUI that will group TV Shows together, so you can click on one, and then the season, and have the episodes available.

Features that would be nice:  Copy file to another drive / usb,  open file location, play back using favorite player (aka VLC), ect...

So what do you guys use?  Or do you just keep them in a giant folder and manually click what you want (good for me, not so much for parents who want to watch some TV).

EDIT:

/> So I have decided to use Plex.

I have my desktop (a 4 drive, raid 10 array), being the Plex Media Server.
I have a laptop that has Plex Home Theater installed on it.  Using this you can go anywhere (Inter- or Intra-net (aka WAN or LAN)) and play from my library (although over the internet will be lower quality due to upload speed limit of 10mbps).
I also have finally gotten my cubox-I setup, this is connected to our main TV.  Plex itself isn't currently compatible with the cubox-I (but it should be eventually).  Because of this, I have setup geexbox with plexbmc, and a plex compatible skin.  (geexbox is a customized Linux distribution specifically for multi-media purposes.  PleXBMC is an add-on for XBMC that lets it easily connect with Plex Media Servers)

On top of this, I have setup a custom RSS feed from BTN (Broadcast The Net), so my favorite TV Series will be automatically downloaded as soon as they are ready.
Once they are downloaded I have uTorrent setup to run a FileBot script that will automatically create a hardlink to my Plex Media Server's folder, along with renaming and sorting the files into appropriate folders (including movies and music) for ease of use.

Took a bit to get setup, but I have to say, it's awesome that a few minutes after an episode finishes airing, it's available on plex from any device in my house.

I would like to thank both Centran and especially Driz, for giving me the idea, motivation and some technical help to do this.

I like your setup at your house. With the exception of a few kids movies (for the kid), I delete after viewing.

storage is so cheap, and when you go back to the sandbox, you're expected to bring a fat drive of movies and shows! never delete!
