Vex's Official PSA on Why Not to Buy The Stanley Parable

Recommended Posts

no i play games for good mechanics and enjoyability. ex. SNES games on emulator are free and amazing. i can't think of one off the top of my head but even some text-based games ive played were more fun than The Stanley Parable. graphics do help create an atmosphere, and The Stanley Parable does try to set a tone. it's just a really bland one, intentionally done for the sake of a message that never really gets its due because the game is far too short to develop on any of the themes it sets out to delve into

Here is a video on why the Stanley Parable is a smart and intelligent game, in my opinion.

I would upload toatalbiscut's review but its down and I know how much sG thinks that he's a twat (kinda is)

The game is really tongue in cheek, trying to make you think about what your choices are in a video game. If you just play it for the sake of playing a game that engages you then you have already lost the meaning of the game. The entire point of the game is to replay the game to get different endings and to explore the things that are said to you. You must engage in the game and actively think about what is being said to you.

Okay, ignoring the contradiction I just pointed out, the game is an effort at disengaging the player from digital reality and telling them to go outside and enjoy real life. that's what the end message is. it's a great idea, but the game never does -engage- you, and every time you try to -engage- it, it slaps you in the face and quite literally tells you no. those bits are interesting but very short-lived, because The Stanley Parable then proceeds to retake narrative control, rendering your decisions pointless and the end outcome ultimately the same rehashed idea in some modicum of 15 different forms.

if this game had a plot, and the plot went somewhere, and it slowly reached these 15 different paths, or if each path had a purpose to one core, interesting story, it -might- be worth the purchase. but it doesnt do that. it gives you no background but a meaningless, dull existence just to mock that existence, as if it were some social commentary. except that no one's life is really that simple. ultimately, the game attempts to simplify reality not for an artistic end but a way of cutting corners. and that's where it no longer becomes an experiment in meta but just another way to rip off customers, all the while implicitly mocking them in their purchase
