I keep hearing about the recent Java vulnerabilties and this article helped a little but ... maybe I'm missing something here.

I remember hearing about this sometime ago, I'm pretty sure I remember people at Java pointed out the vulnerabilities and said they would fix it with the next big Java update, something along those lines.
