Ive been trying to convince Sandy and Mitch to try it, SPAZ is a 2D space sim that is quite enjoyable. Starting with one ship, you eventually command a small fleet of vessels of various sizes. The action is quite fun, twitch based and surprisingly tactical. missiles can be shot down, points can be invested into point defense and automated turrets for your larger cruisers. All in all an enjoyable experience for 15 dollars.
There is currently a demo available on steam. Everyone should give it a whirl!

Its very possible the ports needed for a stable steam connection are blocked by your university. Give your Help Desk a call, they should be able to provide you with answers.
