Edit: I can only assume that the reason there are 5 ability slots and 1 ultimate is for heroes such as shadowfiend, doom bringer, and faerie dragon. All of which have more than the typical 4 binds. And don't call creeps minions; this isn't LoL.

Minion is the HoN term for units under your control.

I don't think you can apply for it. Aside from pros, other game development studios are the only ones getting beta keys that I know of. IceFrog said Valve is aiming for large scale beta in Fall.
