[TUT] How to use Steam with Linux

Recommended Posts

Note: I did this on 7.10 x86. It should work nearly the same for you if you use 8.04, but I couldn't honestly tell you. Can't predict x64.

The Programs:

http://www.ubuntu.com/

http://www.wine-doors.org/wordpress/

http://gfire.info/

http://www.getfirefox.com

The Setup Sequences:

1. Ubuntu

1a. Download and burn ISO (preferably Live Version to make sure that everything checks out)

1b. Boot to the CD and install Ubuntu

1c. Reboot

*UPDATE*

Optional: Install the 8.04 LTS upgrade

1. 8.04 is the newest version (obviously, lol) and LTS means Long Term Support. That means that it will be supported for 4 years I think.

2. Make sure that Ubuntu is 100% up to date

3. Just click the update button, it will download the update manager and download the huge package.

2. Wine doors

2a. Download the Debian/Ubuntu DEB.

2b. Double click your newly downloaded file to be greeted with the root login screen, get familiar with it, you'll soon learn to love it.

2c. Allow all of the required libraries to download and install, the install is pretty hassle free, not a lot to do.

2d. Wine doors will ask for AutoHotKey 1 or something like that, it'll point you to a folder where there's a resources sub-folder, open that, AHK is inside.

2e. When the package manager says it's done and installed close out all of the windows regarding Wine Doors.

2f. Then, go to Applications and then to Wine and finally Wine doors.

2g. Fill in your stuff, I always check I have a valid license, dunno what would happen without it checked.

2h. Click Tahoma Font and click download

2i. Click DirectX Runtime and click download

2j. Click the arrow next to Show Available Applications and then go to Queue

2k. Click apply

2l. Wait for it to finish, it's completely automated

2m. Go back to Available Applications

2n. Select Steam and then click download

2o. Click apply

2p. Wait for it

2q. Done, go to Applications, then Wine, then Program Files, then lastly Steam, there it is.

3. Gfire

3a. Gfire is an xfire clone for Linux seeing as how the Xfire guys decided to basically destroy all Linux capabilities.

3b. Download the DEB from the downloads page, don't worry about the games list, that will be done for you.

3c. Install the plugin just like we installed Wine Doors above.

3d. Open up Pidgin from Applications - Internet - Pidgin Instant Messenger

3e. If you haven't set up any accounts, this is really easy.

3e-1. Click add, under the protocol select xfire, fill in your info (Local alias is what you see when you send something i.e. rather than "=(UV)= Claytonian |DJ|", I see "Me". That is local only, obviously, they will still see your Xfire name.)

3e-2. Repeat for the other accounts you may have. AIM, MSN, Yahoo...

3f. If you haven added accounts, to add more just go to Accounts then Add/Manage and click Add

(SS of Xfire under Linux below)

Getting games working:

http://edhewitt.co.uk/gfireportal/ - Go here

Note: If you do decide to run Xfire rather than Gfire, don't be fooled by the perfect loading sequence (detecting games...) It gets bad.

4. Compiz Fusion (Optional, but awesome)

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xC5uEe5OzNQ&feature=related]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xC5uEe5OzNQ...feature=related[/ame] - Good showing.of what it does, and if you're good with paying attention you'll notice I said Compiz Fusion, not Beryl. Compiz Fusion is a mix of Beryl and Compiz Extras. So it's essentially the same thing. (Good song BTW)

4a. http://www.howtoforge.com/compiz-fusion-ub...geforce-fx-5200

4b. Read that, he does it very well. I know it says Nvidia FX 5200, I had success with my 7600.

5. Firefox 3.0

5a. Click the download button, it'll be Linux now instead of Windows.

5b. Extract the "firefox" folder to somewhere

5c. Open up the folder and run the FireFox script (it'll be a scrap of paper with a bunch of gears in it)

5d. Accept the terms and whatever

5e. (Optional) Shortcut

5e-1. Right click on the firefox in the top bar (not the one under applications)

5e-2. Go to properties and then click browse for the location

5e-3. Navigate to your folder and select the firefox script. Click on the button for Firefox now.

5f. (Optional) <strike>Macromedia</strike> Adobe Flash

5f-1. http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/do...=shockwaveFlash (Download the tar.gz)

5f-2. Extract that somewhere

5f-3. Crack open the terminal under accessories.

5f-4. Type. cd /home/yourname/Desktop/install_flash_player_9_linux if you put it on the desktop like I did

5f-5. After that finishes, type ./flashplayer-installer.

5f-6. It'll tell you a bunch of stuff that you can figure out for yourself, Install to where ever it says Mozilla is (press y then enter)

Video drivers:

6a. Envy

This will install your video drivers automagically. I haven't used this yet because I don't have Ubuntu installed right now, but it is supposed to work great.

(Thanks Nic!)

Questions below:

Q: Why would I want to do this? Linux sucks!

A: OBVIOUS TROLL IS OBVIOUS, GTFO. No, you'd want to do this because I spent <strike>30</strike> 90 minutes on this Tutorial, no, for serious now. I get great performance in CS:S now. Ask S3xmagik, I bitch about my CS:S performance all the time. It's horrible. Steam under Linux gave me the same recommended settings on Adv. Video settings except for HDR (DON'T CLICK THAT, FREEZES GAME) and Water Reflections (Set to Simple instead of All) I get about 60 solid on Dust2 w/ 1 other person as compared to 30 in the same situation on Windows. This is probably because of the lack of Anti-virus, but hold on, why no anti-virus you ask, you don't need one. <strike>Unix users aren't virus coding bastards.</strike> Linux requires permission to do system level file operations. To get this permission, you need the root password. So unless someone made a virus that keylogs you while you do sudo shit, then changes system files, you're ok.

Q: Uh-oh, I'm not quite right like you are Clay, help please?

A: Post it below.

Q: I have an ATI card and I wan't Compiz, is there a tutorial for it?

A: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=488385 Note, I obviously haven't tried this, if you do, send me some feedback.

Q: How do I sync my iPod?

A: http://www.linuxjournal.com/article/9266 (tl;dr)

Q: How do I sync my (mp3 player name here)

A: I dunno lulz, help me out and find out for yourself.

Q: How do I sync my Zune?

A: With Windows, srsly. Doesn't work under Ubuntu.

Q: I have another question

A: Post it below, PM me, or do some research on your own and I will incorporate it into the tutorial.

Other Games:

1. Battlefield 2:

1a. Pop your disc in

1b. Open up "Computer" then open up your CD drive

1c. Double click on setup

1d. Let it run it's course

1e. Go to Applications, Wine, Program Files, then the Battlefield 2 folder, and click on Battlefield 2

Note: I didn't test this, I'm imagining this is how it would go if I did install BF2, I have Vietnam and I'll test with that later.

Tips

Get Yakuake, It's in the Add Remove Programs tool.

It has a console that pops down with the terminal in it, I use it extensively for when I need to copy code into the terminal for installs or whatever.

I'm willing to try this once I get my internet back for the sake of uber CSS performance.

Couple questions:

1. Are you using Ubuntu now as your main OS, or did you set a partition?

2. Will Ubuntu make a partition on your harddrive automatically from the free space left?

I'm probably going to reformat, and make Ubuntu my Steam gaming OS, and have Windows for everything else.

Sorry, I completely missed your post. I had Ubuntu as my main OS, then I got rid of it because it couldn't run Oblivion. I have no idea why I thought my P(OS)C could run that game, but I'm back to being Billy's bitch. Also, I was never good at installing Ubuntu on a partition. I usually just used either another HD or my entire HD.
