Suggestions on what to do about my internet

Recommended Posts

With sG being an internet based community i thought i'd ask for suggestions on what to do about my pmsing internet because of the possibility someone else has had the same problem and solved it. Here recently i have been getting horrendous lag spikes where i start at 50 ping and go up to around 1,000 ping randomly without any warning or anyone else using my internet along with random rubber banding that does not show up on my ping. There is not a pattern to the spikes either its random. I've called up the company being nice but eventually they just blew me off as no big deal, I've called them up being stern which worked for a bit but resulted in the same thing, a tech coming out pushing a couple of buttons on their laptop and it is fixed for a week or two and eventually them scheduling a tech to come out that never shows up. My router is not the issue btw, i have swapped routers and i still had the same issue and my internet is supposed to be unlimited.

Unfortunately the only other option i have is satellite internet which from what I've heard is AIDS for gaming. Is there anything i could do because it's driving me nuts. There is times when i can't even do school work because of how bad it is at times. My theory is I'm getting throttled but I'm not sure. If there is anything you have in mind that i haven't tried im open to suggestions because im supposed to be getting 12mbps down but at most i get 3 but I am still paying for the 12.

-Thanks for your time for reading that long ass post if you did and/or for suggesting something.

Access your router and give yourself higher QoS. Priority usage on the wifi.

If a tech came out and fixed the issue find out what they did to fix it. If they came and connected to your network and did something on their laptop you should be able to do the same thing on your own computer. Considering you've had max speeds before their isn't a setting you can change to give you those same max speeds if you didn't alter any settings to begin with. You'll most likely need to figure out what is bogging your internet.

Some suggestions

Unplug both router and Modem for roughly 30 seconds then turn them back on.

Check if your router has any firmware updates available

Assuming WiFI enabled change your password to make sure no one else is using it

If Modem is owned consider replacing it with a newer one if it's old, if it's ISP owned see if they can replace it with a newer model

Check cables for any damage and replace if necessary

Hope something helps but definitely try to get info on that tech's fix. It may only have lasted for a few weeks but if you can do it yourself it saves the hassle of dealing with them.

Rubber banding has to do with your hardware, I used to have an big issue with rubber banding until I upgraded my computer. I was never able to figure out what part of my hardware was causing it.

How do you connect to your router? If you are using wifi, then you should switch to cable and if you are using a cable, then you should check the cable for any damages.

Might be win 10 constantly updating if that's the OS you're using. Press win key + r, type in services.msc, find windows update in the list, right click and click stop (don't disable unless you don't give a fuck about updates) and see if it helps any.

If you restart your computer after this it will go back to normal

Also check your wireless setup in your router and make sure it's secure. If necessary, change your wifi password in the case that you gave it to some friends or neighbors that might be raping your bandwidth because fuck them

Ask anyone I play with, my connection sucks ass, and look where I'm at. I really have no authority over switching ISPs so I usually make do. Most of the time for me it's just a simple "reset the router" and it'll come back to *somewhat* normal.

i have asked them what they are doing but they wont give me an answer unfortunately. I have changed the password for the router and it is a decently new router. it is also up to date and the cables are fine. im about to investigate to see if there is something bogging my internet though that could be very possible (something updating while its "powered off") Thanks for the suggestions.

unfortunately i cant trace it back to m computer hardware, it runs my games like its nothing at 60 frames (I thought the same thing so i also turned it on low settings with the same issue prevailing) but i connect via wifi. Im about to change to cable to see if that will help. Thanks for the suggestion, much appreciated.

unfortunately yes i use windows 10 (straight up suicide fuel) it sucks SOO hard but I haven't had it update during my game times to my knowledge. Im going to check for all i know the sneaky bastard could be updating under my nose bogging me down. I have also changed my password on my router because my neighbors are douche canoes that do steal bandwidth to download porn (no joke) on my connection given the chance. Thanks for the suggestion. Much appreciated

I try that occasionally but unfortunately for me the success rate is 3/10 but it does work sometimes so i will probably start doing that more. Thnks for the suggestion much appreciated

It has to do with the hardware, it didn´t effect any other games than CS:GO for me either. Changing settings also won´t help, it is very weird but the only thing that fixed it for me was to get a new mainboard and a new cpu.

it affects more than CSGO as far as the rubber banding. I have it do that on gmod about as much. wish i could trace it to just the motherboard and cpu though it would be alot easier than playing "internet detective" on my connection. i will however look at it just in case (i've been wanting to give my self more excuses to buy a new cpu)

You referenced the router being good. What about the modem? Or do you have one of the all in one router/modem boxes like what comcast gives out?

i have the two in one (windstream box/ the potato) they made it out like i would not be able to get my potential speed with my previouse router or any other router for some reason which i think is bullshit but i went with it. it does however do decent besides the bullshit i listed above.

Two in ones suck IMO. For instance I have comcast and use my own modem and router. Never had any speed issues I couldn't resolve myself by updating firmware or a quick reset. A buddy of mine just switched over to his own modem and router from their all in one box and the issues he was having went away. It's a possibility you can look into more.
