Facebook Rooms

Recommended Posts

Well, I know many people on the forums aren't really big into Facebook, but I use it from time to time. However, a while back, I noticed they implemented a new type of group called "Rooms" for a chatting interface. I've noticed that many of these "rooms" can have many people in them. I've seen a few rooms with shady people in them, obviously using these rooms to sell scheduled 1 - 4 drugs. This had me thinking to myself. Should rooms be discontinued as they can be used to host other illegal things such as trafficking people and organized crime, since if you are not in the room, you cannot see what goes on inside a them. I'm not really sure if Facebook can view a room without it being reported or has any detection mechanics to void such scenarios. There are many rooms made just as jokes, and others make rooms to keep up with friends or other silly things such as the newest and freshest memes. However, I feel that "rooms" should be discontinued as a whole to avoid helping aid organized crimes and criminal activity.

Disclaimer: I have not been in a room, nor intend to; I may have the whole Facebook Room wrong.

Just like Facebook can see what goes on in your 'secret' level groups, I'm sure they can see what goes on in your 'room'.  Whether they choose to use that info or not, is the more debatable question

If they discontinued Facebook rooms what stops drug dealers from just using another site to group chat?

It wouldn't be so easy to get people on other sites rather than Facebook. Kik is another app people can use for organised crime. With eliminating Facebook rooms, it potentially has the chance to make organizing criminal activity harder to organize to a large crowd.

What exactly do you mean by this? I'm assuming (could be wrong) that you mean if Bob was suspected of drug dealing, the feds could take a look at his facebook profile's chat history and use that as evidence. What's to stop him from using an alternate account with a different name then?

The rest of the post suggests deleting every other way of communicating with groups of people online, which is never going to happen lol. Also, if you wanted to stop large distributions of drugs online then you'd probably have a better approach with shutting down black markets like the Silk Road. I'm sure there are a ton of other resources that people used once that got shut down -- Facebook rooms would be the last place you'd check for guaranteed illegal drug dealing.

It will be harder to use facebook for that stuff. They are always "listening'/"watching". Facebook is a big player in machine learning. They kind of have to be now that they fucked themselves over with Facebook Live. So basically as their system learns more and more and gets better they instantly shut down things like this or at least flag them for review. Drug deals I imagine would be flagged since it isn't something that needs to be immediately stopped like gee I don't know beating the crap out of a mentally handicapped kid or raping someone on a live stream.
