So much for not being able to run the ball without fullback Kevin Mack (left ankle), who stood on the sidelines in street clothes. Running back Joe Morris got most of the work, rushing for 70 of the Browns' 113 yards. And so much for the injury-depleted secondary getting picked on all day. Second-year cornerback Randy Hilliard, who has played mostly on special teams, performed like an All-Pro. He had one interception that helped seal the victory and two fourth-quarter sacks, the last of which stalled a Patriots' scoring threat. "Our secondary has been maligned a lot," said Belichick. "But they played well." The Browns led at halftime, 7-0, but should have been up, 21-0. In the first quarter, they failed to cash in on an interception by Mike Johnson. On the ensuing drive, a 35-yard TD pass to Webster Slaughter was nullified by a procedure call on Slaughter. That play was followed by a delay-of-game penalty and a 7-yard sack of Kosar. Defensively, the Browns got off to a slow start, as well. On the Patriots' second drive, Anthony Pleasant was whistled for the first of two offsides calls. Three plays later, running back Leonard Russell spun away from traffic for a 24-yard run. Fortunately for the Browns, the Patriots did plenty to defeat themselves. On that same drive, a pass to Irving Fryar drifted far enough that he had to step out of bounds at the Browns' 2 on what would have been a 41-yard completion.

"Wright questionable: Starting left cornerback Eric Wright is questionable for the Vikings game with a knee injury and was limited in practice on Friday. If Wright can't play, he'll most likely be replaced by Hank Poteat, who's started 18 career games. Questionable means there's a 50-50 chance of playing. Also questionable are linebacker David Bowens (knee), running back Jerome Harrison (knee) and Rogers (foot). All were limited in practice. Guard Rex Hadnot is out with a knee injury, and running back Cedric Peerman is doubtful with a thigh injury. Linebacker Alex Hall (shoulder) and tight end Steve Heiden (knee) are probable. For the Vikings, premier receiver Bernard Berrian is questionable with a pulled hamstring.Joe vs. Jared: Left tackle Joe Thomas will get a battle from Pro Bowl end Jared Allen, who led the Vikings with 14.5 sacks last season. "It's tough," said coach Eric Mangini. "He's an impressive rusher. He has a great motor, good in terms of his speed rush and then the ability to transition from speed to power when they incorporate some of the games that they have. It's challenging. You look at the rest of the group, they're tough too. It's not like you can just say, OK, well if we just handle him, we'll be in good shape."

John Kuntz/The Plain DealerKamerion Wimbley (95) earned praise from Eric Mangini on Monday for his work in Saturday's victory over the Lions. Here, he finishes off a tackle of Lions receiver Eric Fowler after Hank Poteat (right) made the initial hit. CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Scribbles in my Browns notebook: 1. Since returning in 1999, the only season the Browns ranked in the top 20 in rushing was 2007, when Jamal Lewis ran for 1,304 yards and they were eighth. That year, it was Derek Anderson's deep passing that often set up the run. That was true in the 27-10 victory over Detroit. Anderson came out throwing. Four of the first plays were passes, and he had completions of 24, 20 and 14 yards. The 74-yard drive ended with Lewis rumbling four yards into the end zone. 2. When the Browns took a 20-0 lead at the end of the first quarter, they threw nine passes compared to eight runs. A key was Anderson hitting on routes between 10 and 25 yards long. That forced the linebackers and safety to stay back off the line -- and made it a little easier to run, which was the same formula in 2007.3. All of this happened against the Lions, who were winless in 2008 and had the worst defense in the league. But it shows why some coaches like Anderson -- the strong arm puts special pressure on the defense and helps the running game. Can he do that against a better defense that brings some pressure? That's what the Browns coaches want to see, and the Tennessee game may give some clues. Thomas Ondrey/The Plain DealerSo far, Derek Anderson (right) and Brady Quinn have shown their strengths and weaknesses in the first two exhibition games. How they respond against a quality defense in the Tennessee Titans on Saturday figures to resolve the Great QB Debate of 2009, says Terry Pluto.4. While Eric Mangini was pleased overall with Anderson (8-of-13, 130 yards), he was annoyed by Anderson's interception with 41 seconds left in the first half.

Mangini's new players hardly seem enamored of him.Not happy: The offseason, training camp and exhibition games have not left Rich Passan of the Orange and Brown Report in much of a mood about the Browns. He writes:Along the way, Mangini has vacillated to the extreme on his starting quarterback (more on that later), treated his men like children with punishment laps for mistakes, attempted to manage the news with the media and broken up the seating in the dressing room in the name of camaraderie. Wonder how that sits with players who tend to be cliquish. The new coach preached discipline, focus, attention to detail and hard work. And all he received in the exhibition season, which came mercifully to an end last Thursday with one of the most meaningless games in years (no wonder fans are upset with having to pay full price for exhibitions), was more of what we witnessed under Romeo Crennel. Failure to run the ball, failure to stop the run, dumb penalties, poor execution, virtually no pass rush and inconsistent play at quarterback. We'll see, maybe: How will Brady Quinn do if he has won the starting quarterback job over Derek Anderson? Steve Doerschuk of the Canton Repository wonders, too:Vikings Head Coach Brad Childress told Minnesota writers, "It doesn't matter who starts," but what else is he going to say?If it's Quinn, how prepared is he to quickly prove he was worth the 2007 draft-day acrobatics that brought him in as a Round 1 pick?Perhaps it will help Quinn to have soaked up the NFL game, despite seldom playing in one.

(On if the Vikings ran the Wildcat offense last year)- "They did." (On if we will see more of the Wildcat in the NFL this year)- "I think every team is going to have it until you stop it. Who knows what it will be this year, probably Wishbone. The good thing is, you have a coordinator here that's been in college before. I had to stop that in Hutchinson Junior College, so we'll be alright." (On what made Kevin Williams stand out in college)- "He was a freshman and playing his tail off. Of course, he was about 250 pounds then, not 350. He's a great athlete. He's a young guy that always worked hard. I'm not surprised by his success. We had Jamal Williams too, that was the reason why we stopped everybody. They're good players. I'm looking forward to seeing him at the ball game, and hopefully after the game, beating him." (On how Corey Williams fits in the defense)- "I think he's really coming on. I think he had the slow start, obviously, being injured. He's coming on. He's going to help us. He has a lot of good talent. He can rush the passer. He's learning how to two-gap and he's doing a good job for us." (On Kamerion Wimbley)- "I'm not real sure about how he looked before, but he's a very athletic guy. He's smart. He's a tough, competitive guy. We're going to use him in a multiple role, like I said, back when however long that was, before vacation or whatever it was. He's going to be great. He's a talented guy and we're looking forward to a lot of good things from him." (On if it is tough to put a new cornerback in at nickel since Corey Ivy played that position in preseason)- "The guy's been in the league forever. Whoever we put in there, I don't know if we've said who we put in there, but anyway, whoever we put in there is going to be good.

Mangini said Anderson was under pressure and should have taken the sack, allowing the clock to run out. Just like Brady Quinn's end-zone interception at the end of the first half at Green Bay, the coach hates these type of errors because they are very avoidable. 5. Same with some of the penalties, and not just the excessive celebration by Eric Wright after he made an interception. Mangini said the offensive players have been warned that the officials will be pay special attention to making sure linemen are on the line of scrimmage for the snap. John St. Clair was flagged for that, negating a 13-yard completion from Quinn to Mike Furrey. Mangini said these type of penalties "tick me off." 6. It was good to watch the defense make rookie quarterback Matt Stafford look rattled. The Browns also had the goal of keeping Stafford in the pocket -- he can be an effective scrambler. They did that, something that was a failure the week before at Green Bay. 7. Mangini indicated Alex Hall and Kamerion Wimbley did a good job "protecting the edge," which means keeping the quarterback in the pocket and shutting down sweeps. The Browns seem very encouraged by Wimbley, who is being positioned at several spots on the line. 8. The Browns are playing rookie David Veikune at both the inside and outside linebacker positions. That indicates Leon Williams may not make the team. He is in his fourth season, and the fourth rounder from 2006 has not made much of an impact. Rookie linebacker Kaluka Maiava probably is in better position than Williams because of his special teams play. Maiava was captain of that unit at USC. Beau Bell also doesn't seem to be in the picture right now. 9. Mangini will keep searching for a viable second back behind Lewis. James Davis took full advantage of Jerome Harrison being out with an undisclosed injury to romp for 116 yards. Mangini has a history of using multiple running backs, and he needs some quickness to offset the bullish style of Lewis -- and keep defenses guessing. 10. If you are expecting Mangini to give clues about his starting quarterback, forget it. Even after he knows, he will keep it a secret because he wants to keep Minnesota guessing as long as possible.

However: Favre did create some controversy, though - at least in the opinion of the New York Daily News Rich Cimini - when he said he would have been receptive to sitting out a game with the biceps injury that plagued him late last season. Favre has started 269 consecutive games.Cimini writes:Brett Favre, speaking in his weekly news conference in Minnesota, said the Jets knew during the season that his right biceps tendon was torn. Reading Favre's quotes, it sounds like he wanted to sit down, but that the coaches and front office pushed him into playing. This is a serious charge by Favre. He never was listed on the injury report by the Jets. (Gee, what a surprise, considering secretive Eric Mangini, who won't even reveal his starting QB in Cleveland, was in charge.) The league has strict rules on injury reports, and commissioner Roger Goodell doesn't like deception. That is a serious injury for a quarterback, and he's basically saying the Jets covered it up.Look for: Plain Dealer Browns coverage includes beat writer Mary Kay Cabot's report on Brady Quinn winning the starting quarterback job; beat writer Tony Grossi's Browns Insider: a transcript of coach Eric Mangini's Wednesday press conference.Stoppers: As potent as the Vikings offense could be, their defense poses just as much a challenge to the Browns. For ClevelandBrowns, Zac Jackson writes of the overall excellence of the Minnesota defense:And as the Browns prepare for Sunday's season opener, they do so knowing they're set to face the team that had the league's best run defense last year and racked up 45 sacks, forced 25 turnovers and scored a pair of touchdowns.

Mangini is acutely aware of the statistic that teams that begin a season with a 1-0 record are more than twice as likely to make the playoffs as teams that start with an 0-1 record. If Mangini thinks that casting any doubt on his starting quarterback would give him a scintilla of an edge against the Vikings, he will take it. Do you (or any of the other reporters) suffer any consequences when reporting 'secret' info, like Quinn at QB? -- Will Morgan, Costa Mesa, Calif. Hey, Will: I will give Mangini credit for this: He never calls out a reporter or holds a grudge against a reporter for a story he disagrees with. He never did it in New York and he hasn't done it in Cleveland. He is smart enough to realize that we have a job to do, too, just like he has one. Me and my friend were debating who the main PD beat writer is for the Browns. I say it's you and he says its Mary Kay Cabot. Who wins the debate? -- Mordy W., Baltimore, Md. Hey, Mordy: You both win. Granted, it was only the Browns' second victory in their last 13 games. But as far as Belichick's concerned, he's 1-1. "It's nice to get the first one," he said. "I'll say that. I thought we did a lot of things we had to do in the game. We controlled the ball a little bit offensively, and I thought the defense did a hell of a job - four turnovers and a shutout. And I thought we played a little better on special teams. Overall, it was a good team effort. Everybody contributed, and that's the way we need to win." It's not that this was a flawless effort. In fact, the Browns and Patriots went head-to-head in the first half on an inordinate amount of foul-ups, bleeps and blunders. Even the officials got in on the act with broken chains that had to be fixed twice. The Browns failed to capitalize on two first-half turnovers, once had 12 men on the field and botched a fourth-and-1 at the 1 when a Kosar pass into the end zone was knocked loose from Paul Farren. The Browns were penalized eight times for 49 yards and had a personnel mix-up on what appeared to be an attempt at a fake punt on another fourth-and-1 near midfield. The mistake was enough to make Belichick throw down his playsheet in anger. "We were a little frustrated at halftime because we felt we could've been up by a few more points," said Metcalf. "But we did what we had to do in the second half, and we came up with the win. That's the important thing." Kosar said the victory was important heading into next week's AFC Central opener against the Bengals. "There's no question we didn't want to be 0-2," Kosar said. CLEVELAND, Ohio -- It's Sunday No. 1 of the Mangini Era, have you said your prayers? Eric Mangini begins getting evaluated on his coaching record today after some time spent being measured as a disciplinarian, paranoid "Belichick-ite," time management guru and 10-thumbed klutz for how he handled his quarterback competition. His training camp was organized and suffered no fools (Shaun Smith, Syndric Steptoe's agent). The Browns clearly improved from the first game against Green Bay, though that's like saying celebrity singing of the national anthem at baseball games improved after Roseanne screeched to a long-awaited last note and grabbed her crotch. Asked after a shoddy practice following that Packers game if his beaten-down players could use some comic relief, Mangini didn't hesitate: "They can watch practice and get comic relief. They can yuk it up over that." That kind of no-nonsense approach plays well in Cleveland -- at least for a while -- since everyone's sense of Romeo Crennel is that if he were asked the same question he would've declared it a good idea and announced an Open Mike night where his boys held a Def Comedy Jam. Tracy Boulian/The Plain DealerThe "all-business" edge that Eric Mangini brought to the Browns this summer may not immediately pay off with wins, says Bud Shaw. But it certainly is an improvement over previous regimes.Meanwhile, Mangini's appreciation for secrecy in his first camp made Dick Cheney look like a gossip columnist. Does that matter? Not yet. But the way his players regurgitated the script was downright Cyborgian. Some immediate success would help give them reason to actually believe what they're saying.

he hooked up on a 34-yarder to him later in the first quarter with the ball on target, on time, and on the kind of hissing line that connected the quarterback and the receiver in 2007, when things looked so promising. The first quarter meant that Anderson, after a brief, brutal turn last week in the exhibition opener at Green Bay, was back in the discussion for the starting quarterback job, particularly when Brady Quinn did little in the second quarter because of penalties, dropped balls and an increased pass rush by the Lions. Meanwhile, Joshua Cribbs had a career in the first quarter as a kick returner. After his 95-yard touchdown kickoff return to start the game was called back, he sailed 84 yards to score on a punt return, weaving through the Lions' coverage unit. Frankly, many appeared to have come to the stadium in a clown car. The Lions' quarterback of the future, rookie Matthew Stafford, threw his first pass, from his own 9, straight to Browns defender Eric Wright. After scrambling 15 yards with the pick to the Lions' 5, Wright rose, waved his arms to the Dawg Pound, like the conductor of a silly symphony, bowed theatrically, then ran across the field and tried to leap into the stands. Referees blew the whistle, penalizing the Browns for inane behavior. The Browns shuffled backward and eventually settled for a field goal. There is a long history of Browns players acting like it's Mardi Gras after big plays. Brandon McDonald somersaulted into the end zone with an interception for the only TD in the team's long scoring famine. "Act like you've been there before," is the old saying, although, until the Lions came to town, the Browns mostly had not. The half ended with Anderson attempting to run the two-minute drill. A sore point at least since the days of Tim Couch, it got sorer, as the "drive" devolved into three time-wasting dump-offs and then a tipped-ball interception. It gave the Lions a field goal on the last play of the half. Hey, look on the bright side: They got points out of the two-minute drill! By the way, the rematch is Nov. 22 in Detroit. The game will count. Trust me, there will be tickets available.

When you have that, you have a lot of different things that you have to do to try to control it." I don't think it's just in terms of, here's the game plan, and he's going to go out of the context of it. It's more, here's an opportunity, I'm going to try to take advantage of that opportunity. He does it really well." (On if he trusted Favre if he went away from the game plan)- "I never felt like he was going off the script, or off the game plan. Brett's great, too, about talking through things. During the course of the week, talking through, 'Okay, well I know we're going to run this play, but if we get this opportunity, what do you think?' It wasn't something where he'd just surprise you with the way that he was going. He's very good about that. You analyze it. You look at it. You try to assess where potential opportunities could be. Sometimes it may be on the sideline, 'Hey, this corner's sitting hard outside here, this corner's biting up on this.' What you don't want to do is coach that out of him, because he makes a lot of plays with it." I thought we made some strides in terms of understanding what we have to do to win the game and also understanding what they do and how we have to play the things that they do, so specific to our game plan and also the context of the Vikings' specific strengths as well. We are really looking to finish the week strong, build on those things. We got a little bit of a head start yesterday on the red zone, which was positive. We'll continue to work there and goal line, short yards, the typical Friday process. "I talked to the team this morning and spent a lot of time just discussing the fact that we control the things that happen by the way that we work. When you understand the benefits that hard work brings, it's really much easier to do that. I just shared with them a story that happened to me a couple of nights ago. I went home, and it was kind of late, and got into bed. I have a three-year old and the five-year old. I had gone down, they were in bed, which they have been quite a bit lately. They're in bed and I woke up with the five year old, not intentionally, but he kind of woke up. He said to me, 'Daddy, why do you have to work so much?' Having that discussion late, with a five-year old, when you're trying to go to sleep, it just happens. I explained to him, 'Well Jake, you like to go to Disney World right?' and he said, 'Yeah,' 'Cape Cod and all those things.

Jason Witten Jersey

(On if Quinn's background with Charlie Weis helped him at all)

Vince Wilfork Jersey

We have our scout team, we have some fine players there, but we don't have Adrian Peterson. His ability is phenomenal and the quarterback is a Hall of Fame guy. He can work magic with that ball. It's going to be a great test for us. We have a great plan here, I think, so I'm looking forward to it." He said he's convinced the Browns will be more of an attacking defense and one that can stop the run. Last season, they finished tied for second-last with 17 sacks and were 28th against the run. "I'm looking forward to watching these guys play," he said. "I'm excited about the potential we have on defense here with the Cleveland Browns. Yes, you have to stop the run. The body of our work we did in the preseason, the last few games, it's not perfect, but we know how to stop the run." He's said he's also still certain that former No. 1 Kamerion Wimbley is going to be great. "He's a very athletic guy. He's smart. He's a tough, competitive guy," Ryan said. "We're going to use him in a multiple role, like I said back in [June]. He's a talented guy and we're looking forward to a lot of good things from him." He said he's not sure if Shaun Rogers (foot) is healthy enough to go yet, but "once he's out there full speed, he's going to be excellent for us." He added that Corey Williams, who's behind Robaire Smith at right end, "is really coming on. I think he had the slow start, obviously, being injured. He's going to help us. He has a lot of good talent.

Tennessee Titans Jersey

but that's why he was that, because he worked and he set a tempo and it was such a good example for people to see. You want to know how to be successful? Work hard. Work hard every day. Be a pro."(On if Robaire Smith can be an every down player at right end) - "In terms of his exact role, Jeff (Schudel), that will play itself out. From watching him and getting to know him, I've liked the things that he's done. I don't know what his role will be, big picture, because it will probably fluctuate each week, based on who we're playing."(On if Brian Robiskie hit the rookie wall during training camp and played through it) - "With rookies sometimes the wall hits them. They don't hit the wall, the wall hits them. It's a tough transition. I lose track of it sometimes, in this position. You think, 'Okay, he's been here X amount of days.' I remember my first year on defense in New York, with the Jets, I was probably hitting that wall, too. Those guys had been together for a long time. I had to do all the breakdowns. I said, 'How do you want me to do it?' 'You figure it out.' You have a gigantic playbook. You're studying it every night. You think you're relatively intelligent, until you can't pick it up as quickly as you hoped you would. I remember talking to Julie at night sometimes going, 'God, I must be slow. I can't pick this up as quickly as I thought I would.' Then, the clouds start to move away, the sun comes out and things make sense."(On Kaluka Maiava's progress on special teams) - "He's gotten better in the last couple weeks, in terms of his production on special teams. That was something he was very good at, at USC. He also, when he got a chance, was a pretty good defensive player. It took a little time, he had to work into a role and what I'm looking for is, kind of the same thing from his, as everybody else. What are you going to do on teams? That gets you to the 53. Are you good enough to get to the 45?
