"Unlimited Detail Real-Time Rendering Technology Preview 2011"

Recommended Posts

I thought this was pretty amazing. The games we play will soon be '100000x' more realistic than what we play now.

These guys have developed a new rendering system that no longer uses polygons, but 'atoms' instead. The result is that there are no restraints to the artists who create the environments in a game.

Well according to the video, same as now basically. The reason they dont do graphics that good with polygons is because it would make it impossible to play without a space shuttle computer or something. What this does is allows them to do that without raping system requirements.

Interesting, but I wish they'd explain how it works. There has to be a caveat.

Games use polygons. A couple points in space with lines drawn between them. This makes up the shapes in games.

Here is a simple example. Lets take a very very basic flat wall. You need 4 points to make the rectangle for the wall. This new technology doesn't do that because it is "unlimited detail". Instead it puts thousands of dots between what would normally be 4 points. Which is kind of silly in this simple example but is greatly beneficial for complex shapes. The problem is that it would normally take a super computer to render out a scene with all those dots. What this new technology does is takes into account the clients view, distance, and if objects are behind other objects it calculates the minimum amount of dots it needs. So even though the wall is made up of thousands of dots the technology can figure out that you only really need 4 dots if you are looking at it far away but if you get closer then it throw in more dots to increase the detail.

With polygons the entire area the character is in is calculated. This new technology can figure out what is truly needed.

The caveat? You can't do complex animations or physics... pretty big caveat for games.

The big problem is that these people aren't releasing any information! So some people think it might be a hoax. Some people think the basic approach they are taking won't work. Some people think the claims they make are false. WE DON'T KNOW cause these bastards won't release or talk to anyone.

Don't get too excited people it is voxel technology so it might take awhile till we get this tech in our games one day.

Actually it's point cloud data, same principle but still completely different technology.

For some odd reason, I have a problem believing Notch's technology expertise on anything.

Still made millions off of Java. :3

The issue here is that while this looks baws, and would be stellar progress as far as graphics go, we don't really know how to manipulate graphics systems like that yet (as far as the game engine, etc.), so we'll need whole new game systems on top of those to be able to properly manipulate all the new graphics. This looks pretty promising as far as being able to interact with environments goes though :P

Could you imagine being able to literally manipulate any object on a map/server/world??? Legit.

EDIT: Derp daderp
