.999999999999999999999=1 Much better than 2=1

Recommended Posts

Alright, you're gonna need the higher thought process of repeating decimals (which many of you don't have).

Let a = .999999999 repeating

1) a = .9999999999999 repeating

2) 10a = 9.99999999999999 repeating

3) 10a - a = 9.99999999999999 repeating - a

4) 9a = 9.99999999 repeating - .999999999 repeating

5) 9a = 9

6) a = 1

7) a = 1 = .9999999999 repeating

8) Profit

Win!

This also uses the fact of infinite number sequences, which I'm sure blows many people's minds on this forum. To explain, an infinite number does not have a finite number of numbers, so you can take one away from the infinite number and it will still be an infinite number.

Bah, I feel like I have to explain this at an 8th grade math level. I haven't even posted yet.

in step 4 if you took .999999999 from one side wouldn't you have to take it from the other?

i know that wookie... i was trying to explain in basicer math

@ people of color

please look at step 3...

10a - a = 10(.9999999999999999999) - (.9999999999999999999) = 9a

this is just a really weird example of limits to. lim of x as x approaches 1 is 1. lolz

Easier way to explain it is simply, 7/9 = 0.777... 8/9 = 0.888... therefore 9/9 = 0.999... and also 1.

I personally like the thirds one:

1/3 = .33333

2/3 = .66666

3/3 = .99999

3/3 = 1/1 = 1

therefore .99999 = 1
