  1. Alright, here's the word from the guys.

we have placed the order, invoice should be generated soon. they will have the whole new box setup with in the 2 week window and then pop the cpu in once it arrives.

they will relocate our USB drive, SSD, and SATA all together, this means NO OS reload and no adding the vms to esxi. they'll already be there.

They have said they can schedule it so we are only down for one hour.

their support is 24/7 so we can schedule the outage window. Currently i am planning for something around 8am CST during the week.

Please consolidate a list of events through the events manager to let me know if you have events on certain days coming up in the next 2 weeks. I want to try to work around your plans.  i don't want a whole bunch of pms, just one consolidated list please, thanks.

  2. Everyone, we have finished our "test phase" with the new host. Based on poll results and staff opinion we are pretty happy with the new host. I apologize to those of you who got worse pings. the gains far outweighed those few people though. Primarily the fact that we have been DDoS'd 3x since moving hosts with no one even noticing. the last attack peaked at 915Mbps and we didn't feel it at all.

That all being said, with the test phase over, there will be some downtime. I have not scheduled that time yet, im waiting for an invoice and some more information. during the downtime, we will be getting a new cpu, the E3-1280-v3 which is the fastest single thread performing cpu there is, and a second 1Gbps link on a separate switch providing us additional bandwidth and some network redundancy.

the delay will be caused by the HD move. after they set up the new box, i will shut our stuff down (100% of it) they will remove our hard drives (the SSD and the SATA) and install them in our new box. following this, they will put in a USB drive and load ESXi 5.5 on it. Once this is complete, i will reload our VMs into esxi and turn everything on. aside from a few IPs changing (not game IPs) which will be no problem since they are ones we use via dns(such as www.joinsg.net and voice.joinsg.net)  there will be no problems.

I expect the outage to last less than 8 hours, but we will know more soon. the CPU has a 2 week lead time, so we're trying to get everything in order. I will update this as I get information. thanks everyone.

  3. 10% of 5 seconds is still negligible

microsoft NEEDS us to buy a os every couple of years because they like money- dont blame them

dont get me wrong if you had the choice between 7 and 8 you would have to be really dumb to blindly stick with 7 because UI SUX

windows 7 on an ssd does not boot in 5 seconds. and if you say it does, i say video or it's bs.

windows 8 DOES boot in 5 seconds

to the ui.. i think metro is the most horrible thing i've ever seen, and sadly, threshold is continuing it. luckily, you can disable metro and have the normal ui of xp/vista/2k/or 7

  4. straight from a VET, windows 8 is so fast, users confuse it with being an SSD!

as a side note, for the first 4 months of windows 8's release, anyone in the world could purchase it for 29.95 from microsoft's website.

so.. 10% boot speed increase.. 30bucks? yah.. worth it.

of course there are quite a few other nice things in windows 8. anyconnect. better ipv6 support, better nfs support, etc.

  5. I remember when 16mb was a lot of memory.

except it still didnt matter because of upper memory :( memmaker for the win.

actually, during the windows 3.1x days, i was using slackware linux and playing doom with its masterful? graphics  but dos 6.22 was trash :(

iomega zip drives and 33.6 modems... ahh

to the op though, i think windows 8 and 7 look the same (if you disable metro) but the major difference is the speed.

Fast Startup (aka: hybrid boot or hybrid Shutdown) is a new feature in Windows 8 to help your PC start up faster after shutting down. When turned on, Windows 8 does this by using a hybrid shutdown (a partial hibernate) method that saves only the kernal session and device drivers (system information) to the hibernate (hiberfil.sys) file on disk instead of closing it when you shut down your PC. This also makes the hiberfil.sys file to be much smaller than what hibernate would use (often 4GB or more). When you start your PC again, Windows 8 uses that saved system information to resume your system instead of having to do a cold boot to fully restart it. Using this technique with boot gives a significant advantage for boot times, since reading the hiberfile in and reinitializing drivers is much faster on most systems (30-70% faster on most systems tested). If you have a motherboard with UEFI, then fast startup will be even faster.

with a ssd and windows 8, it's actually physically impossible to hit the keyboard combo for safe mode quick enough to get into it.

Yes, that headline says exactly what you think. We know faster boot times are one of the key goals for Windows 8 (and early testing suggests that goal is being met). So much so that, as Microsoft puts it: “Windows 8 has a problem – it really can boot up too quickly.”

We’ve already discussed one potential problem with a super-fast boot time on Windows 8: it can be hard to access BIOS settings using function keys if there’s no pause before Windows starts loading. Windows 8 is handling that issue by letting you change the boot drive inside Windows itself. Given that one of the most common BIOS alterations is changing the boot drive, that’s a useful start.

so to everyone who has always hated on windows 8 in here. from a linux guy, i say, im sorry that windows 8 is too fast for you scrubs.

  6. I like fantasy/scifi and horror i just got finished reading Airframe and Prey by Michael Chricton and i have one book left in the Mallorean which is a 6 book series coming after another 6 book series called the belgariad both of which are by David Eddings[i highly recommend these books to any and everyone] i also like vampire books(not twilight but the blood and gore rip people apart kind) ive prob read 80-60% of the starwars books that occur in the timeline after episode 6(way too fucking many i couldnt find the rest(also huge nerd :l )) ummmm but yea i like the plot twist books any suggestions would be much appreciated

everything by david and leigh eddings is badass. raymond e. feist, terry brooks, terry goodkind, and of course the guy who died in the last quarter of his fucking series, Robert bit-the-dust-prematurely Jordan.

  7. Alright guys, the plan was to turn css (bhop) on back on limestone to setup persistent favorites, but it appears as most of the population is already playing. it was the first populated server on the new host in fact. that being said, i see no reason to move anything back to limestone at this point. Everything will stay as is with minor performance tweaks as we evaluate things.

We will enable persistent favorites on our css servers (and gmod once the ability exists) in the case we ever move IPs again, but we do not expect this anytime in the near future.

that all being said, the last items to transition are fastdl, currently you are still pulling maps from limestone. ctark took the time to rewrite his sync script and completely redo fastdl from scratch, removing a lot of the trash. it should see a responsiveness increase much like the "cleaned" forums did. Once we move that, i will build a vm for some internal staff stuff to be moved which includes our development box where we test things before throwing it on the real servers. at that point, our business with limestone will be completed. I will begin the process of shutting all services down on limestone and moving DNS off their servers. on the 21st, we will solely be on the new host.

I will be discussing a timeline with jason to complete the upgrade. I assume everyone has been pleased (minus the bugs with databases and such) with the new host. that being the case (if it's not please speak up) we will have the cpu upgraded and get our 2nd 1Gbps link. I will put a poll up in pub  for you to vote on if you like the new host thus far. I'm not looking for a lot of commentary unless you feel the need to explain your vote. thanks everyone for being patient with the hiccups and unexpected parts of the move. we had a plan and.. we were unable to follow it as some bad things happened and we just completed the move a little early.

  8. New Host Updates:

Community, let me apologize for the lack of correspondence in what's been going on and catch you up.

As you know, we began moving some services over to the new host. Teamspeak has been running on the new host for about 2 days now. You may have also noticed that the website seems much snappier and shouts are instant. this is because we also moved the web server. We lost about 45 minutes of data at 9pm central last night but i think the performance gain was worth it.

With that there is some not-so-good news. We took the servers down for maintenance to sync the database to the new server, NO INFORMATION HAS BEEN LOST, but the passwords are causing issues. Ctark and I worked for about 12 hours on everything last night and we both had to bail for sleep before work. Klark and jason are aware of the current status and will also be assisting. Once we correct the permissions your levels and such will work again.

Currently all servers are running on the new box except ttt while i copy over maps. zach pointed out that maps were stored in a different location and they are now being synced. csgo persistent favorites should have updated for those so you may not have even noticed. css and gmod do NOT have persistent favorites at this time so they are a manual update. Tonight we will move css servers back over to limestone until persistent favorites are fixed.

Let me reiterate that we have NOT reset levels or any other items.

I will try to continue providing relevant updates as they come. we do apologize for the issues, but part of our goal in this host change is to clean up items that haven't been used for years. we did this with the website and you can definitely see a speed increase in the responsiveness. We want this same quality for all the game servers and I'm sure you can all agree it's worth it. While we try to do things late at night when the population is low, we have jobs/lives too and must sleep. We hope to avoid cutting into play time in the future but until the transition is 100% it may occur. We expect to be fully on the new host within 1 week at which time things should stabilize.

Approximately 2 weeks after that we will have another outage while the host upgrades our CPU in the new box to the newest best performing single threaded processor existing. they will also double our bandwidth, our hard drive space, our ssd space, and our memory. this outage can be up to 24 hours, but very clearly worth it.

    Here are the new IPs:

    • MC - 173.234.61.205
    • War3 - 173.234.237.51
    • JB - 173.234.237.52

    • ZE - 173.234.237.54
    • MG - 173.234.237.55
    • Bhop - 173.234.237.56
    • Surf - 173.234.237.57

  9. Well in previous generations the dual gpu 690 used almost the same amout power and was actually hotter than 2 680's, and the 780ti like significantly out preforms the titan on everything but 4k like 6-12fps difference it only had 3gb but its clocked at 7ghz which is 1ghz faster than the titan. Also the 780ti uses the same chip as the titan but the titan has 1 block with 3 SMX units disabled while the 780ti has everything unlocked a full fledged gk110, i only see this being useful is for someone in an office space using a mini-atx or an itx case with 2 or 3 4k monitors because preformance wise 4k is the only thing this would excel in preformance wise, but since it only uses one heat sink it probably only takes about 50w less than normal but yea this seems to be for a very specific group of people

    titan != titan z

the titan z uses a brand new gpu... what are you basing this information on? the 780ti does not outperform the titan z on anything.

  10. 780ref was only 3 GB so still double the ram. And they both take two slots right? Lot is performance in half the source plus litter power consumption and heat dissipation with the new arch
