Building Desktop (Help!)

Recommended Posts

Hello, I am moving over the summer to Arizona, after this move, I will be getting a desktop of around 1.2 thousand dollars. This is not including monitors and such, just the desktop itself, if you have any tips on building the computer or buying it prebuilt. Also, what specs should it have? Please help me pick out a good computer! :)

I am mostly looking for a gaming/streaming computer, but mostly a gaming.

Then I recommend an Intel i5 processor and a gtx 960 or 970.

Depends on what games you're trying to stream/game on. I7 for streaming games if that's going to be a regular thing. Since your budget is 1.2k you'll have no problem fitting a 970GTX along with a 6700k I7 Processor and 16gb ram, an SSD and Hard Drive with some decent cooling! The question is whether or not you actually want to spend that much money or you just want to casually game on it for the most part

1)Spend $300-$400 on a G-sync 144hz monitor out of that 1.2k budget.

2) Get yourself a trusty motherboard (ASROCK, MSI, ASUS predator, etc.)

3) 16gb ram (either DDR3 or DDR4, if you want DDR4, make sure to buy a compatible motherboard)

4) Get a skylake processor, either i5 or i7. If you know how to overclock, get an appropriate motherboard and any intel processors with the letter "K" at the end (ex: i7 6600K)

5) Get a modular power supply to make your build look neat

6) Get a GTX 970 or whatever GPU you would like. Your GPU choice should reflect the resolution you're going to be playing in. For the GTX 970, it is a little unnecessary to do 1080p when you can do 1440p, but that's your choice.

7) Get an SSD as your booting drive (the one that will have your Operating System). You could get the regular SATA III, make it faster by configuring 2 or more SSD's in RAID 0, or just go crazy and get a PCI-e SSD. You won't regret it. Honestly, unless you're doing large file transfers, you don't really need the PCI-e SSD. A SATA III SSD will do.

8)Get a sexy looking case: http://www.amazon.com/quiet-Silent-Window-Orange-BGW01/dp/B010Q80XRA/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1460270446&sr=8-5&keywords=be+quiet+800 as a random example.

9) Build that motherfucker yourself with a help if you need. Always ground yourself when you build.

10) Get a damn mechanical keyboard.

11) Enjoy.

My machine:

Intel i7 4860HQ 2.4GHz-3.6GHz

512 GB SSD RAID 0

NVIDIA GTX 870......m 6GB GDDR5

16GB DDR3 Ram

To clarify point 6, since my system is running a 3K IGZO panel, the high vram (the 6GB GDDR5) is needed to run the 3K dispaly smoothly. There will be variants of the same GPU with different amount of vRAM. More is not necessarily better remember. It's all about the resolution you're going to be running the games in. I MUST STRESS THIS POINT. DON'T GO FUCKING WASTE YOUR MONEY ON A GTX 980 OR AMD R390X WITH 6GB vRAM AND PLAY IN 1080p.

I wrote this to make it easy for you, not to patronize you on your knowledge about PC parts. If this is your first time building a new PC from scratch, you're bound to fuck up, but you learn from the experience and it's quite rewarding. Except that my beast is a laptop. SIKE

This is good if you are streaming, if you are not streaming, drop the i7 down to a 6600k and buy a better SSD.

Pretty much exactly what I would suggest for him, but personally I would downgrade the PSU to something like this in order to make room for a better CPU cooler for better overclocking performance (for example, this).

Other than that, I agree with you completely.
