Overclocked today!!

Recommended Posts

I had a hard time getting everything just right, but I think I got it stable. I overclocked a 4600+ from 2.4 to 2.65 and it is pretty stable. 102F after about twenty minutes of CS though. Is that safe?? I looked it up and all the bloggers seem to say that 195 is the max but that sounds nutty to me.

Also, I can't seem to overclock my video card. Every time i do it, Vista (I know) makes a "blocked" noise and the settings do not apply. The card is a BFG7600 GS 512. I really need to bump teh core clock because I seem to be topped out at about 65 fps on the video stress test and my room mates pc gets about 100.

Any clues?

Yeha thats fine... I have my 4800 x2 clocked at 2.851 GHz Run stable at 40c

But i have antect case with 4 120mm and 1 200mm. So i have the best air flow. If you want to OC that to 3.0Ghz buy a water cooled system. But you should be fine how does the voltage look tho? And mem bandwith?'

GIVE ME SOMTHING TO WORK WITH!

considering that i am a computer science major i will say one thing.

WTF ARE YOU OVERCLOCKING A 4600+ FOR?! I'm sure it runs CS:S just fine without it. Unless you are moving massive files or doing large scale video editing, you do not need to risk overclocking your machine and risk nuking it over a couple extra FPS. And considering that it's a 512, you should try tweaking the card first that is prolly the issue. Never run a machine over it's rating, it cuts the life on the machine in half, unless you use a crazy cooling system i.e. water. Remember processors dont fail by temperatures slowly going up. They end up crashing or auto killing the power. They fry in milliseconds. Do you have dynamic overclocking and do you bring the machine back down when you shut it off? I think OCing is unecessary, and the risk you take OCing it isn't worth it. Just a thought tho, not that i would know anything about IS.

OH COME ON.... wtf... u call that over clocking??

U flame noob

And i totaly agree with Bios, there is no need to OC, if u Over clock ur comp and something screws up.. well, theres a 1.3 grand mechine out the window, the fact of the matter is:

Build a mechine that is so unholy overpowered that u wont need to buy another mechine for 3 or 4 years, that way U KNOW ur getting ur moneys worth, and also that way by the time u need to OC the blasted thing its so feckin old that it wont really matter if u disintergrate the processor

System specs:

MotherBoard: http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.aspx?sku=322111

Ram: http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.aspx?sku=329156 (two of those)

Processor: http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.aspx?sku=331906

Graphics: http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.aspx?sku=327539 (two of those)

HardDrive: http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.aspx?sku=331024 (three of those) (cus i do ALOT of recording with fraps an stuff)

Power: http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.aspx?sku=330091 (that but only the seasonic version)

Standerd heatsink nothing special

No Fans, Case on, Temp on graphics cards drops to 45C from 60C to 70C on Heavy load ive only once ever seen it go to 75C and that was when i was Frapping a game of Supreme Commander with 8 AI on a HUGE map

That is my mechine, not over clocked, that will last me the guts of 5 to 7 years if i dont overclock the thing, and if i do overclick it then 3 to 5 years max

It cost me 2.2 grand and it is well worth it

I bought my machine in 2003 and it still works fine for cs. I spent 1200 4 years ago. I admit I'm about due but still. I have an athlon 64 3200+ 1 gig ram, 128 vid card EVGA 5900 Geforce FX. I do have 400 gigs of drive space tho on three SATAs RAID 0. LMAO

and about 250gigs of space with Western Digital

and kobol played CSS on 65 fps witch isnt to bad for a 4600+

and i got that comp about 6 or 7 years ago, and he did me up until just before xmas when the power cut out and fryed EVERYTHING that was anywhere close in proxy to the power unit sad.gif i cryed so hard sad.gif

i run a 500watt supply,(helpful hint. always use good power supplies with backups, more stress on supply means that it will be less efficient and generate heat.) 1 gig of PC3200. MSI K8T1000 I think.

LOL! For fun!! I just wanted to see how high I can get it. I want a new motherboard and chip anyway, so I figure why not?

Current Rig:

Thermaltake Sviper case w/2 200mm fans and cpu temp gauge

ASUS A8N SLI Deluxe mother board

4600+, OC at 2.66 (running more stable now at about 85F)

PNY nVidia 7600 GS 512MB (I can't figure out how to overclock this thing, help if you know how!)

2G PC3200 RAM, CL 3

500 GB Seagate HDD

other crap not worth mentioning

Pieced it together for about $600. Might sell it on craigslist to some old lady or college student who might pay to much for it and build something on an AM2 chipset.

Yes, it runs counterstrike just fine, but do you think that's all I use it for? I can have a movie playing on the TV and play Cstrike, Fear, UT, BF on my PC with out dropping frames.

If you have money and dont care by all means nuke away.

Rolled back to 2.4 after 2 blue screens in one night. I guess it wasn't as stable as I thought!! Honestly didn't make a big difference anyhow. not on any games.

I can do one better.

For $2,210 (no tax), you can get a BFG 680i SLi mother board, Intel Core 2 Duo 2.6GHz E6700, OCZ 2GB Platinum RAM, 2 BFG 8800GTS 640MB OC2 cards, OCZ GamerXtreme 700Watt PSU, Creative SoundBlaster X-Fi Fatal1ty Xtreme sound card, and a Western Digital 500GB 7,500 RPM hard drive.

All from NewEgg, of course...

see what i mean. it's not like im trying to be a dick about it. I just want to share some of the things i know. I don't like seeing other peoples stuff get fucked up. I'd rather help them from frying it in the first place. and like i said, its not worth the few extra frames. not too mention when you have a machine as good as yours, a couple extra frames isnt even going to be noticable. the human eye only sees up to about 100Hz. So anything more is just for bragging rights. smile.gif If you wanna see some sick systems, check out the Nvidia gaming systems of the month. Crazy shit. some guy had 16 GIGS of RAM. HOLY CHRIST! HE got like 210 fps on DOOM 3!!!

I think it was safe, I just don't know anything about changing the memory speed or whatever so it still works right with the higher bus speed. I am kinda noobish at this, but the error on the blue screen listed what looked like memory errors. The core temp was about 108 when it happened, I have a friend who's Pentium runs at 144 non stop stock.

My room mate just got an 8800, a GS OC, I think. That bastard was pulling about 200 FPS on CS:S stress test and about 70 FPS on FEAR. 16 Gigs is beyond overkill. I really doubt that any game out now needs more than 4 to run top notch (well, maybe supreme commander). There is a MAC at Fry's that can support up to 16 Gigs and a PS on Voodoo that does up to 25. Nuts, just nuts that people would spend thousans on RAM alone. I would build my own damn server if I had that kind of cash to throw around.
