ctark 1983 Posted March 10, 2014 So I'm building a new rig for a friend. He really doesn't game. Mainly just watches movies and browses the internet. Budget is $900 (went a bit over after tax's and shipping, opps) MOBO:EVGA Z87 FTW: $252.72http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=8745139&CatId=8586 CPU:Intel i5-4670: $249.99http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819116898 Case:Cooler Master HAF 912: $59.97http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=6531504&CatId=1509 Power Supply:EVGA 500W: $53.99http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/searchtools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=8748218 Operating System:Windows 8.1 (Home): $109.99http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/searchtools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=8588430 RAM: *****2x6GB, 1600Mhz: $150ishhttp://www.corsair.com/en/tr3x6g1600c8dNow you may be like: good build, good parts, wtf ram.... The reason I am going with that ram: I already have it. It's left over from when I upgraded my rig a year ago. Now, you may also notice the mobo is only dual channel, so I would have to use single channel, 3x2gb. My question to you all: Should I just buy 2x4gb ram (see below), or should I try and use this ram, and if it works out, I get $150 in my pocket, and get rid of this ram....?Also, this ram was purchased for an i7, so it likes 1.65volts, where the other ram is 1.5v (I think thats what the newer procs use). Do you see this being a huge issue? So I was thinking of going with this ram if the other doesn't work out...http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=7025810&CatId=3473But it works out to about $140 after taxes and shipping, so about the same. Thoughts? So my questions:Good Build? RAM.... Please advise. Suggestions? EDIT: Also on a personal note, i'm thinking of buying a new SSD for my OS, any thoughts, I haven't been paying attention to them recently.

ctark 1983 Posted March 10, 2014 Riiiiiiiight. "For a friend." If this was for me, I wouldn't be getting mediocre parts. All or nothing.... Also it's more a neighbour than a friend, but that doesn't really matter. edit: added a question about SSD's, please look at that 1 Goldentongue reacted to this
Destin 1958 Posted March 10, 2014 (edited) The Vengeance is good just watch out for that high profile heatsink if you're going with an aftermarket cooler, but if the 2x6GB works with the newer mobo and cpu then fuck it why not. The only other thing I saw is a 500W PSU when all you have is CPU and Memory you could probably save some $$ and bump it down to 400 or maybe even 350W my old rig just had a pentium and memory and it ran off of a 275W, and haswell is designed to use less power. Joscal 339 Posted March 10, 2014 Imo the motherboard is slightly overkill. 1 ctark reacted to this

Good point, I was trying to find a 750Watt too..... Then again, do you really trust a Power supply thats less than $50? I mean I could go down the street and buy a 300watt for $20, but the last time I did that it died in 6 months.... hmm, multiple people have told me the mobo is overkill, I would probably agree. Gonna look at others.Keep thoughts coming guys, and Thanks!

Swed 2651 Posted March 10, 2014 ASRock makes good, cheap MOBOs if you are willing to go down that road They are also a subsidiary of ASUS, and generally are of the same qualityThis is the one I have: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157293&clickid=3TsTNoTFkTXXVxD2eax7-TZeUkTWhkQ9uX273k0&iradid=97618&ircid=2106&irpid=79301&nm_mc=AFC-IR&cm_mmc=AFC-IR-_-na-_-na-_-na 2 Destin and ctark reacted to this

_kyle_ 318 Posted March 11, 2014 why get such an expensive motherboard if he's not gaming? Something like an Asrock or one of these would be better for him imo. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813132046 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130727 1 ctark reacted to this

ctark 1983 Posted March 14, 2014 Ya, I ended up going with a cheaper ASUS mobo. Should do everything he needed, ended up getting a 1TB Caviar Black to go with it, he insisted the Blue 1TB he had, was the cause of all his problems, and only wants it for backups......... 1/2 the parts have arrived already, and the rest should be here monday. Thanks for the help guys!
