Stupid ass Lag Spikes (Rubberbanding)

Recommended Posts

Alright, so for the past couple weeks i've been having these annoying lag spikes whenever I try to play online (CS:GO, BF4) but as soon as I start to play, every 10 seconds or so my ping jumps from a 50 to a 200 in a split second which ruins the game experience. I also just got a new router.

Things i've tried so far:

Closing background Applications, unplugging the router, contacted my ISP, and defrag'd my drive.

Wanted to see if you guys had any solutions that have worked for you in the past.

EDIT: Also i'm using wireless and there's no Ethernet slot in my room.

Do you connect to the Internet on any other device or does anyone else in your house use the Internet?

Run a ping test

How many other wireless networks are in range

Did this start when you got your new router

About 3 other networks are in range. and It started right after I got the new router.

And yes Eek, there are others on the internet. But this wasn't a problem in the past.

I usually have similar problems with my ping when my house mates are streaming stupid shit on Youtube, but since they  know shit all, I block their device for 30 minutes/1 hour most nights.

Try going into your routers Admin settings and changing the wireless frequency channel?

Already tried the 1,6, and 11 channel. No luck.

Maybe one of the other people on your network discovered torrenting donkey porn.

If your router has QoS settings, prioritize gaming. If the router detects packets coming from .exe files linked to games (you can add games manually with some routers) it'll dedicate a chunk of the overall bandwidth to solely gaming with that enabled and provided you're using the correct settings. I know my ASUS RT-N53 has a GUI for QoS, but YMMV

What type of router do you have? brand/model etc

open up a cmd and ping your router's IP address like this:

cmd -> ping xxx.xxx.x.x -t

and watch it for a while to see if you get any ping spikes. then repeat with another IP address, like:

ping 67.195.160.76 -t

(it's yahoo)

and see if you get any abnormal jumps.

A Motorola SBG6580

I also tried pinging my IP address and kept getting timed out. If that helps.

And I had a 0 percent loss for that other ip.

Butting in on this one, but that is pretty much an ISP-managed router. If you're renting, I'd personally advise to return it and grab a higher quality one after doing a little digging. Personal recommendation is the router I picked up: ASUS RT-N53. The QoS is very user-friendly and easy to setup/manage

It's one my parents bought for me, so no chance on returning it for now, any other way to get over the lag?

if you don't have a lot of money to spend try to get the cheapest DD-WRT compatible router you can. I bought a Belkin Play N600 for $30 and it's great with DD-WRT. At this price point it can be a bit of a crapshoot, though.
