Wave 2200 Posted November 26, 2013 (edited) Alright, so for the past couple weeks i've been having these annoying lag spikes whenever I try to play online (CS:GO, BF4) but as soon as I start to play, every 10 seconds or so my ping jumps from a 50 to a 200 in a split second which ruins the game experience. I also just got a new router. Things i've tried so far:Closing background Applications, unplugging the router, contacted my ISP, and defrag'd my drive. Wanted to see if you guys had any solutions that have worked for you in the past. EDIT: Also i'm using wireless and there's no Ethernet slot in my room. ElectronicDrug 7496 Posted November 26, 2013 Run a ping test How many other wireless networks are in range Did this start when you got your new router
Lvl. 100 Latias 711 Posted November 26, 2013 Try using an Ethernet cable. I got this same bullshit when I tried using the school's wi-fi and when I plugged in the cable it magically fixed itself.

Try going into your routers Admin settings and changing the wireless frequency channel? Edited November 26, 2013 by Eek

MOFLSTOMP 899 Posted November 26, 2013 If your router has QoS settings, prioritize gaming. If the router detects packets coming from .exe files linked to games (you can add games manually with some routers) it'll dedicate a chunk of the overall bandwidth to solely gaming with that enabled and provided you're using the correct settings. I know my ASUS RT-N53 has a GUI for QoS, but YMMV
Ika 320 Posted November 26, 2013 What type of router do you have? brand/model etc open up a cmd and ping your router's IP address like this:cmd -> ping xxx.xxx.x.x -t and watch it for a while to see if you get any ping spikes. then repeat with another IP address, like:ping 67.195.160.76 -t (it's yahoo) and see if you get any abnormal jumps. Wave 2200 Posted November 26, 2013 (edited) What type of router do you have? brand/model etc A Motorola SBG6580 I also tried pinging my IP address and kept getting timed out. If that helps. And I had a 0 percent loss for that other ip. Edited November 26, 2013 by Wave

If you're renting, I'd personally advise to return it and grab a higher quality one after doing a little digging. Personal recommendation is the router I picked up: ASUS RT-N53. The QoS is very user-friendly and easy to setup/manage

Ika 320 Posted November 26, 2013 if you don't have a lot of money to spend try to get the cheapest DD-WRT compatible router you can. I bought a Belkin Play N600 for $30 and it's great with DD-WRT. At this price point it can be a bit of a crapshoot, though.
