Obama's inauguration

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (Madmartigan @ Jan 20 2009, 11:36 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}></div>

I've got no problem with educational pieces, but don't try and tell me that making kids watch some shit for 3 hours isn't overboard. You know if that shit happened with bush you'd be mad. This has nothing to do with who was elected though...it's the principle that certain peoples political ideologies ARE being injected into young minds. If people want to like obama, like him for what he stands for, NOT because he has become some pop-icon and people feel the need to push their obsession with him on others. That young jeezy shit is pathetic, fucking ignorant rappers

I was "forced" to watch both the first and second Bush inaugurations, and while I didn't like having to watch it, that doesn't mean I was being injected with political propaganda making me into a little closed-minded right-winged conservative (clearly), nor does it mean I didn't appreciate the experience later on. It was educational, I can look back now and say I got to see that dumbass sworn in both times, and looking back, I'm glad I was made to watch it.

The Inauguration isn't partisan-- it's a historical moment, there's nothing left or right about it, it happens for EVERY President. To be forced to watch it isn't obscene or socialist, it's a way of educating our highschoolers about our electoral process. It's not like they were forced to watch a "Mission Accomplished" speech filled with political propaganda, it was the swearing in of a President for Christ's sake; it's been the same for decades.

EDIT::

Holy shit bios.

Agreed

I was out of school(finals/midterms ftw) but it's something that your kids(if you have kids) are probably going to ask you one day when they come home from their history lesson

"Hey mommy/daddy/whateverthefuck did you see the first black president get elected?"

It was a historical moment when people stayed up watching the election results and it's a historical moment when he got inaugurated

Your never forced to watch anything, I'm positive you could have put your head down and been like "Sorry I'm a republican I don't like obama" and your teacher wouldn't have said anything

I only watched the end of it, which there alone gave me goosebumps - When you actually sit there and listen to it it was quite an amazing speech(I watched the rest later)

Yeah but hes black and from the ghetto. I mean no offense to any black people, but if he wasn't rapping, he'd be stealing food and selling crack while collecting a state check every month. Most rappers aren't the most intelligent people out there. Kinda like sports icons, like T.O. and Plaxico Burress. I mean they both are ignorant as fuck. Plaxico couldn't even figure out that carrying a gun in your sweat pants with the safety off, might not be a good idea. Not to mention, someone would prolly shoot his ass before he even knew what hit him.

Yeah. Because black people from the ghetto / homeless black people never amount to anything "worthwhile."

He's not ignorant. I said ignorant black person from the ghetto, not motivated to do good black person. Same is true for Brett Favre and his dumb hillibilly-ness. He'd be pumpin gas if he wasn't a football player. I also never said that there weren't exceptions to the rule.

Or Tom Brady, he'd just be some cocky ass play boy wandering around the city, wearing his gucci shades and prada jacket.

I probably came across quite brash. I'm just highly annoyed with the ridiculous attitudes so many blacks have with Obama. By all means be proud that your candidate got elected, but the race issue has got to be the most outdone thing in the US. How many blacks actually voted for Obama because of his platforms is beyond my knowledge, however something tells me the number of votes he recieved for his skin color went through the roof. If people want racial issues to disappear they have to stop pushing them...black and white isn't as much of a contrast as it was in the past, I don't think a single one of my friends judges anyone based on skin color, but rather by the character of a person...in my opinion the way it should be.

Stereotypes can, and will be formed for obvious reasons. Mainly that people have a tendency to categorize things, including other people. If 90% of blacks from the ghetto come out selling drugs and using government checks to sustain themselves, is it that far off to assume that most you meet from those same circumstances will be the same?? In that sense fox, your comment really isn't that offensive, because in most cases it's true.

And Junzou, I don't think he said nobody from the ghetto ever amounted to anything. The slums are a regrettable part of our society, and I think everyone living in or out of them wants them gone. Removing the crap environment would definitely produce more ethical people...It's unfortunate that nobody seems to know how to do so, but denying that most of what comes out of the ghetto is dispicable, is ignorant. I know you are very educated, especially in the field of societal issues, don't want you to think I'm bashing you or anything.

I have no idea where I'm going with this, I had a point but I lost it...so I'll just call it quits there

I think what madmartigan is saying is that a lot of black people are just voting for him because he's black and not because they agree with his policies. I think it is very true also. Another thing is that if we were voting for someone for being white then we would be racists. I think that is the type of frustration that Madmartigan speaks of.

Fox and contract, yes that is part of my frustration.

Junzou, I don't know about the part of the nation that you're from, but the ghetto's here are not pretty for anyone. It's not an illusion that they are creating more garbage than good. I am not the type to actually judge someone before I meet them, even if my mind causes stereotypes to form. Sure, if I run into some fool with his pants sagging, his music blaring, and spinners on some rinkydink car...I'm going to 'assume' that that person isn't much of a benefit to society. However if that person approaches me, or if I have so reason to approach him, and that person treats me with respect then I will form a positive notion about him. I think that you believe I'm just some underground racist clown who has a close minded view on what the real world is like. I really don't care what the skin color is, I like to think I have pretty open mind, and I know that I nearly always look from other sides before I form an opinion. While I can't denounce something that is probably true in many cases, I really don't think that illusory correlation or self fulfilling prophecies have much to do for what I've noticed.

Anyway, don't think you were on a soapbox or anything...I like debating with you, it's thought provoking

Has anyone confirmed that he repeated the oath of office completely and properly (I know there was a flub durring the live one)? If not hes technically not the president because it has to be done 100% by the book or something like that.

God, you'll try anything not to accept him as your President, won't you? Where are the people who were all up in arms when we bashed Bush saying "He's the President and you better respect him damnit?" What a coincidence that they've disappeared now.

Martigan I'm about to read your post and respond, I know I saw my name mentioned.

You're right, ghettos aren't pretty, and yes, the socio-economic status of the inhabitants is lower-middle to lower class. But the reason I posted the illusory correlation wiki article was for you to acknowledge that maybe, just maybe, your perceptions of inhabitants of the ghettos are inflated toward a more negative attitude. It's not your fault, it doesn't make you racist or elitist, it's just a psychological phenomenon that is part of the human condition, and recognizing/admitting that this effect may affect your perceptions is paramount to having less of a bias towards inhabitants of ghettos.

As far as the other link on self-fulfilling prophecies, that's where racial biases come into play. Though it probably has a less-pronounced effect with you if you're open minded and judge people by their character, the effect IS still there. Say, for example, you see two groups of students congregated in your Student Union or whatever you have at your school-- one white, one black, both wearing jeans and hoodies, both talking about the same thing (let's say, a recent football game), and acting the same way. Both groups may be being loud, but according to studies done with self-fulfilling prophecies, you would be more likely to notice the black group than the white, and use their loud behavior, the way they're dressed, and are acting to re-affirm any stereotypes you have. That doesn't necessarily make you a racist, because you're just going with the natural flow of how the average human mind works; challenging that flow is what makes you more open-minded, and it can be really difficult.

As a final note, I'm going to say that I'm not perfect (lolwut), and though I may portray myself as being immune to these things because I recognize them, that's definitely not the case. Knowledge is power though, and recognizing when these things are happening, making yourself stop and give the situation a second look will definitely change your perspective on a lot of situations.

It has nothing to do with me hating obama. I actually hope he'll do the country well. I'm just pointing out facts that I've come across.

Cooliage and hmm I can't remember the other one, Anyway there were two other presidents who screwed up the Oath and were made to redo it in private before officially taking on duties.

I'm just asking because I don't want to see a bunch of abusive lawsuits against the government saying "oh he isn't the president because he didn't do the oath properly" Which is what would happen.

You should be grateful that you have an elected official to watch get inaugurated. Agree with his policies or not, don't be ignorant of how fortunate we all are to live in a world not ruled by kings and emperors (except sandman).

My bad, I remembered the first quote and thought you were excited again to jump at another chance of him not being President :P Thanks for clearing that up :)

Ahhh, thanks for the clarification on the purpose of the sites. I actually understand what you're getting at with the self fulfilling thing...and I'd be one hell of an ass clown to say I hadn't experienced the highlighted section.
