Serif The Sheriff reacted to pug in Repopping War3
    Hey folks,

I know I wasn't the most loved player on the server back in the day, but here's my $0.02. Take it or leave it.

I started on war3 with =(UV)= back in '06. I think what initially drew people to the server was that it was different from vanilla while still being easily accessible. Not to depreciate Face's valuable work/input, but the constant addition of races and items made it continually less accessible to new players and catered more to war3 vets. Maybe y'all should try and get back to the roots of war3; fewer races, fewer items(keep necklace of immunity for Serif and his NE =P). This would make it easier to maintain the server and avoid the crashes caused by all the interacting abilities. Focus on user experience and rewards based on player performance, not play time. Also, and I know this won't be a popular idea, but it would probably be best to reset all levels/exp. You could still grant enough initial exp for a newbie to fully level one race, but essentially force everyone to start from scratch.

Burn it all down, and let it rise again like a phoenix from the ashes.

I've got responsibilities in my life that prevent me from playing like I used to, so I won't get there with you, but I'm happy knowing that the next generation of war3 vets are still out there striving to revive the glory days.

    Happy hunting,

    pug

Not sure how many times people have tried to do this but after reading through the forums a little it sounds like on a couple of occasions people have tried to pop War3 again to no avail. And I am not sure what the attitude was for people those other times since I wasn't around, but this time at least it sounds like we have a decent handful that really want it popped again and are wanting to do their part in popping it which is good. But most of us know that the server has struggled with low pop for quite awhile now for a lot of different reasons and I think that if we are going to repop the server and make it last there is going to have to be more going on than just trying to rely on the regulars hopping in and sending out invites to everyone every day. So below are some ideas that I think can help with popping the server and keeping it popped. (I know Face is on vacation or something so I know this could all be stuff that it delayed until he gets back)

    1) War3 is Back Event: I think having an event to sort of announce the return of the server and people wanting to have it popped could help get an initial boost of people back. Plan it for some weekend and have double XP and maybe even a couple of prizes (this has always helped boost pop in the past for at least a little while).

    2) Special weekdays/weekends: Having a monthly double XP weekend could potentially keep people coming back month after month helping with the longevity of the server. One thing my old server started doing that was pretty popular was having what we called "Bounty Weekends" once or twice a month where a specific category of race was selected (undead, elvish, knife, pistol, dragon, etc...) and anyone playing those races got an xp boost for playing them, but then killing anyone playing those races gave a cash bonus for "collecting bounties". Maybe introduce something like "Wish Wednesdays" where on Wednesdays Wishes are free to everyone for the whole day (just an idea, people can brainstorm on other ideas like that as long as they aren't anything too crazy).

    3) BOTS!: This is something that I have brought up several times before and will probably continue to bring it up, but while reading through a handful of the other forum posts about repopping, and then just from talking to other people about them wanting to play the server again, a lot of people have said that if they see the server with 0-2/20 pop they won't join and will move on to something else for awhile, but if they see it at 6+/20 then they will for sure hop on. Being that first person to hop into the server while it's empty in an attempt to pop it can suck sometimes and it isn't very fun, before I took a break from CS:GO I was one of those people that would do that and would sometimes sit on the server for over an hour waiting for others to get on and sending out invites. When you're the person trying to pop the server you literally just sit there with nothing to do for the duration of your time in the server until someone else joins, no way to get money, no way to get xp, no way to do anything meaningful that makes it worth your time sitting there. I firmly believe that if we were to add 4-6 bots to the server that give limited xp it would help keep the pop up more consistently because then the people joining in to get things popped would at least be able to play and level up some races or do something while they wait for others to join and having those slots filled makes people way more likely to join in and stay a bit without having to worry about things dying out. You can also lock the bots to a bot specific race so they don't get something stupid strong to play in low pop. I think adding bots, more than anything else, is something that should be seriously discussed and maybe even have a poll about to see how people feel about it.

    4) Help Face: I am not sure who else does a whole lot on the server, or in what capacity they work on the server, but as far as I know the vast brunt of it is Face and when he takes breaks from the server it's almost like a stand still as far as things getting worked on, fixed, things getting added (I apologize for anyone who works on the server that disagrees with this statement and contributes more than what people may realize, myself included). If people are serious about keeping the server popped and giving people reasons to stay on the server I think people should step up where possible to help Face and take some of the load off (obviously there is still a certain process to this within the clan itself that people would have to go through) whether it's with fixing maps, adding maps, helping with race bugs, adding/balancing races, general coding of the server, running more events, etc... But we can't just always rely on our Lord and Savior Face to be around to try and single handedly (again, I know there are others who work to support the server and keep it going, just not sure in what capacity so don't take any offense to this lol) save the server and keep things going.

    5) Invite Friends: There are some people that already do this, and this is something that has always been done on the server, but if you are someone that currently doesn't do this and you want the server to be popped this can be a good way to do so. Even if it's just inviting other regulars you are friends with it can help in case they saw the server empty earlier and didn't join, but receiving notification that it's popping could get them to join. Inviting other people that aren't regulars can still be helpful though, if you have any friends that play CS:GO but have never been on the server invite them, or if you have friends that like class-based Shooters but don't play much CS:GO see if they might give it a try, the more people we can get into the server the better.

If people have any other ideas or suggestions this can hopefully be a place to post and talk about them as we try get the server popped like it used to be and bring War3 back to the glory days.

Fixed Ravinick's physical damage lightning so that it is not reduced by magic dmg resistance - this may need to be done to other skills on other races in the future Rocky - looks like a lot but overall I think it's minor Thorns now caps at 30 (down from 35) Knockout now has a 54% chance to proc (down from 60%) Knockout now deals a minimum of 20 damage (down from 35 minimum) Knockout now caps at 50 damage (previously it dealt 2x your damage dealt with no cap - so theoretically 55 with an unmodified right click) Maps now show on the nomination, admin, and RTV list without the "/workshop/" path. They still cannot be nominated easily (via chat, e.g. "/nominate season" will not work) but I have a plan to fix that in the future... just a matter of time

    More bugfixes:
Maybe fixed issue where armor regen breaks when changing from wizard to igna Jaraxxus should now print HP regen stolen to console (similar to how it prints leech stolen). Jaraxxus should now properly steal regen from players Voodoo Witch Doctor chicken ultimate now denies the enemy of invisibility (should fix model issue) Yrel no longer spawns with a glock by default ... I think this was fixing a bug in the past but I couldn't recreate it so hope it works out

    Fixed some big bugs:
Leech should no longer have issues proccing when you deal bonus damage on a hit (e.g. with claws). This is also effectively a buff to any race with leech + bonus damage or leech and access to buy claws Damoi Tui's circle on his knife swing should be visible more frequently to clear confusion about whether or not it works Malfurion's "Ysera's Gift" skill no longer has a bug preventing it from proccing, and it can now heal Malfurion beyond 100 HP up to 150 HP Fixed various bugs with Malfurion's skills breaking (namely Tranquility) Zergling burrow should no longer break If you join the game and have Respawn_None set and get a respawn, it will spawn you at spawn instead of the "center" of the map (0,0,0)

Serif The Sheriff got a reaction from Agent in Human Marine team limit
This has been an expertise for awhile, there are quite a few people on the server who have dealt with it, but it was back when hardly anyone played the race and only one or two people had the expertise so it wasn't that big of an issue to deal with. We now have 5 or so people who have been playing the race on a more regular basis and who purposely try to get on teams together to play in a group with 3 of those people for sure having the expertise.

This ^^^ is the exact opposite of what an expertise should be. Expertises were meant to be small little bonuses that players got for dedicating time to a race they enjoy. And there are definitely a lot of races that have some expertises that don't fit that, but making the argument that the expertise is extremely powerful and talking about how it changes the way the race is played so much you give more reason for something to be done about the expertise.

I completely disagree with this, it's not that it's a unique mechanic to Marine that people just need to learn to deal with. We are all very aware of what the race does, we knew about this before you played on this server and before you played the race, we just never had so many people playing the race and using the expertise together. Cache is a perfect example, we had as many people playing counters to marine as possible, but with 3 marines each with the expertise and all being supported by Holy Paladin and Priest, it's not that easy to shut down that comp. The races that counter respawns have a hard time keeping up with that many respawns, and even a race that would counter marine can only do so much when there 3 of them being focused by support races. The T team had 6 people at one point actively trying to counter that comp but were still having a hard time doing it not because they don't understand the mechanic, but because it's a lot to deal with.

As stated above Expertises were always meant to be small bonuses, not huge buffs or things that change the way the race plays and that is exactly what the Marine expertise does. And there are a lot more races that get attacked for there expertises than you think, whether the expertise is good or not. Some just work really well with the race even if they aren't inherently strong. People complain about NE expertises all the time even though none of it's expertises are near as strong as some of the others on races. Meanwhile I think Naix has one of the top 5 strongest ones because of how well it works for it race and almost no one ever complains about that one. It's not a case of marines expertise being noticeable moreso than other races expertises, it's the strength of the expertise and the way it changes the race PLUS the fact you can have multiple people running around with such a strong expertise. Also don't forget that you get to save minerals/respawns ACROSS MAPS and literally no other race gets to do anything like that.

Yet again to this point I will say that it's not a matter of players being unaware of the mechanic, and most people don't think that Marine is OP in and of itself. Marine has the most drastic change of strength for a race when it gets an expertise and that's what causes the issue here, especially when that strength is multiplied for every other marine you add to a team that has the expertise. You yourself recognize that most other respawn races are restricted to a lower amount than marine is AND they have less respawns than it does because of a single expertise.

The three player limit is 100% not unique to Marine, Star Lord is also a three per team limit and I am pretty sure there might be one more. I also don't think that they intentionally made it have that number of respawns because of Starcraft lore, you're thinking way too much into it.

I get wanting to defend your favorite race and not see it get nerfed or touched, I fight tooth and nail for Night Elf almost every single time someone has asked for a nerf or it has actually been nerfed, but you have to be able to recognize when something needs to be done. Players can't always dedicate themselves to watching your dead bodies in case of a respawn or focusing all of their attention on being ready for it and people don't want to always have to be playing a counter for an expertise rather than the race itself. The fact you think that people's issue is that they just don't understand the mechanic or aren't used to it is way off.

Human Marine is able to utilize his expertise in a unique way, and players aren't used to it.

The ability to hold a respawn until you decide to use it is extremely powerful. While he's dead the Human Marine is able to view both enemies and allies position, and is generally given a huge amount of information to work with. This, combined with good death positioning, and the general tankiness and DPS output of the race, allows him to quickly respawn and kill an unsuspecting player. As Serif stated, I respawned approx. 4 times. In those four times there were at least 3~ players on the bombsite expect during the last and maybe second to last respawn. After the first or even the second respawn you would think somebody would watch for another, but they mostly didn't. The enemy team almost all stared at the bomb after every respawn. This is not a balance issue, this is an example of players who simply aren't used to dealing with this mechanic.

This sort of thing happens when players face a mechanic they're not familiar with. Take a new player and throw him against most of the races in War3. Suicide bombs, Bashing, Evasion, Increased HP. All of these mechanics are new to the player and he's unsure of how to deal with it, but over time he's able to learn what races do, and respond accordingly if he chooses to do so. This is another example of players learning to fight against a mechanic that's unique to Human Marine. There's a variety of ways to deal with respawning opponents, even some counters, but those counters don't necessarily stop it every single time. The Mirage incident is a highlight of what Human Marine is capable of if players aren't careful.

Expertise's in of themselves are something that boost the effectiveness of a race, and the only reason Human Marine's expertise is getting picked on is the noticeable, powerful effect it has. Other races have ridiculously strong expertise, or multiple expertise', but due to the subtle nature of them they're mostly unnoticed by a majority of players.

A variety of factors contributed to this one incident: players that were unaware of the mechanic, the Human Marine's killing potential, and the amount of time and effort put into saving up the minerals. Human Marine is a really basic, but strong race. This makes it easy to pick up and play, because of this players are claiming that it's "Overpowered" or "Noobish", but it's something easily dealt with when understood. As to whether there needs to be 3 Human Marines' on one team or not is debatable. Other respawning races are limited to 1-2 per team, but they respawn themselves and/or teammates, While Human Marines' can only respawn themselves, and this is still only after players have played the race enough to earn the expertise (which is about 10~ players at the moment). The three player limit is something unique to Human Marine as it represents the mass production of marines that happens often in Starcraft, and I think taking that away would somewhat diminish the feel of the race, but that's just my opinion.

    Also...

I'm the second highest Human Marine at level 180~ and I haven't gotten a second expertise yet, especially not one to increase the heat limit.

Human Marine is currently set to a team limit of 3, this inherently isn't that big of a deal, sure it's annoying, but it's not terrible to deal with. However, the expertise on that race is REALLY good, and makes the race quite a bit stronger, and having to deal with one Marine with the expertise can be painful, but having to deal with two or three is just nuts.

As I am typing this we are playing on Mirage and Nutty Dude dies on bomb, then respawns 4 times in a row to end up getting 5 or 6 kills on the ct's as they are trying to defuse. The fact that minerals carry over from map to map and respawn can be used with no real cooldown as many times in a round as they want, the expertise can get ridiculous to deal with if someone chooses to save up minerals over a few maps and doubly so if there are multiple people on one team respawning themselves non stop every round.

If the expertise stays the way it is I think the race should be limited to one per team, but if it stays at 3 per team then I think minerals should no longer carry across map and the respawns should be limited per round.

Back in my day, cash rounds were strong and monies was everywhere. But with the nerf to s t a f f cash (especially that @Bulldog cash ), we have to be extra diligent and efficient with our $$. If Serif was SO, we can further bolster our cash dispensing efficiency to maximize throughput. I guess he can kick and ban and stuff, but lets be real—literally no one gets banned in war3.

I did apply for SO XD but it wasn't until after I did that I found out there were already like 7 of them (not sure if there is any sort of cap). I can't keep track of who is SO for what since we get a lot of SO's for other servers on War3 here and there lol.

On Wednesdays, the race whore plugin is now disabled. This is being dubbed race whore Wednesday and it prints to chat after the map starts so players are aware.

So you admit that the 80 is RARE damage. It doesn't happen that often, not that that makes it less ridiculous of an amount of damage, but the fact it's not consistently dealing that much damage I don't think there is as much of a reason to freak out about it lol.

On to the next point, DON'T SPRAY! If you can't hit the thing because you are spraying too much then stop spraying. 50% of the time I can stand still, shoot the mine, then keep going. Don't panic when you see it, keep calm and aim bruh

Last point, you are the guy who, in the past, has regularly told people not to complain about races because this is a mod based on counters and people just need to learn how to counter races that can be annoying. Why can't you do the same? Any race with speed can escape mines, if you have DR you can take mine hits no problem. Just counter it right?
