First off, I'd like to say thanks @Destin for writing something up, but also providing what you see as solutions to the problems. Even if we don't agree on some points, I appreciate it much more than the typical user who comes in and says we have problem x, without any hint of a solution. If we had the solution to all our problems, we wouldn't have problems. First off, I would say the thing that I disagree with most is that we aren't a business, we shouldn't be compared to one. As Travesty has said, we're a gaming community, where yes, we provide some services (in which case we could handle some things better), but most importantly we bring people together that would probably never have met otherwise to game / become friends. I will admit that your example was one that could have been handled better, regardless of how we as Staff felt. People were upset after thinking they were going to receive something and were told they weren't going to. This is why after talking with Sean, it was decided that it was our fault as staff for a lack of communication, and the users would get what they (even if just an assumption) thought they were going to get for participating. We should have done this to start with, and it will be the manner in which we handle something like this going forward. As far as leadership goes, this one has always been a mixed bag. You have ups and downs for everyone as far as activity, motivation, etc. goes. But overall I'd agree with you. Things take too long to change for the most part. But that doesn't mean that nobody is doing anything - obviously everyone knows there's staff channels, that the public doesn't see. But there's also a lot more segregation than that. There's management channels, engineering channels, etc. that only particular people with those responsibilities have access to. I'm not giving the default excuse of "what we do is behind the scenes", as I've already said I mostly agree with you. But most of us, and most of staff I'd say in general, is at the moment pretty active. As Mimics last announcement hinted, there are staff changes coming that quite honestly, I've been pushing for for quite a few weeks now ( again, where I'm dissatisfied at the time it takes to make changes ), where we'll hopefully see some decent changes. As for community culture, I'd like to start out by saying that if you're going to make a thread like this, don't just dismiss other peoples opinions by saying they're wrong. You can agree to disagree, but if we're going to listen to what you have to say, then you shouldn't react like this I personally think we're the most inclusive we've ever been. It's easier now to join than it ever has been, and I know there are many people who think we should just let people in and wear tags as soon as they make an app if they meet certain play time requirements. I don't necessarily disagree with that, but you've been around long enough to see the storm that it makes with this community. Many people like to have some sort of say in who joins our "club", and we're just never going to make everyone happy. Personally I think we're at a pretty good spot overall in how it works, although I'm never going to turn down tweaks to continue to improve. Lastly, addressing toxicity. I personally don't think I've seen people be actually toxic in a while. Sure we have bickering, some trolling, etc. But I don't think I've seen anything that would warrant in my mind a demotion or JP in a while. I know some people have said they felt harassed, and yeah, maybe sometimes it's a little too targeted/constant. But overall I don't think anyone has been crossing any lines. At least the lines that we've previously setup... When people have made complaints that I've seen (directly come to me, pm to staff, cd thread, etc. ) I typically will go to the person and ask them to chill out. But I personally don't think we need to adjust community standards to create a protective online bubble for people. I'm not saying you just have to grow a thicker skin, I know some people just get offended easily. But there's lots of other ways that you can ignore / dismiss it (blocking them, not engaging them, ignoring it without blocking them...). Again, it's a large community with the purpose to bring people together that enjoy others' company. It's made up of small cliques, and that's fine, you don't have to like everyone... I can guarantee that these will only be looked at once in a blue moon without a complaint being written. We're not going to waste our time combing through logs to hopefully find an abuser and punish them. Not to mention logs give us close to no context of the situation. For those saying that SO's, staff, or other admins in the past haven't been punished, we do our best to evaluate each situation. Sometimes it's a private discussion with the person. Many times we don't want to remove a position / power off of one/a couple minor offenses, but eventually something is done if it needs to be (see: staff cash getting limited (RIP war3)). Also, some people mentioned us not branching out to new games. I'll say it over and over again. If you find some games that are actually popular and support dedicated servers, we're more than open to suggestions. Problem is, most current games aren't giving the option of hosting your own servers, so there hasn't been many choices going around lately.

sure, but you tend to shoot yourself in the foot when you do those long-winded, drawn out complaints. While well-written, they're laced with memes, jokes, and insults, which makes me believe you post them more for rep and less for actually trying to bring light to a certain issue you may have. What I'm trying to say is that when you do that, it can lead people to believe that the CD is a silly gladiator fight, where two or more people post crap in a forum for the rest of us to grab popcorn and watch. It could be downplaying the importance of the CD. Also, you're correct in saying that private PM's to staff are good. But what if it's a staff member that is being complained about? Or if a staff member, say Sean, who addresses the complaint tells the offending party, you for example, that the post has been made? The person making the post could feel contempt or embarrassed when, not if, the issue is brought up in another medium, be it on the forums, discord, or in game.

Something that I do not see a lot of emphasis on is that staff tends to not talk about their planned server releases well enough in advance. There are faint inklings and whispers of new servers being worked on, but there are no official posts. How is the community supposed to get properly invested into the possible upcoming content, if they do not know much about what is actually coming up? One such example is the ZS game mode for Garry's Mod. This has been discussed for years, and there was some recent staff interest in it, once again. Is it really what anyone in the wider community wants? Will it be marketed properly so that people that would want it actually know about it? How would it be ethically monetized to offset additional server resource usage and engineer commitment? The answers to those questions won't be know until the project is much closer to completion, if it is even being worked on or being seriously considered. Earlier disclosure of such projects might also help with drawing in programming talent that could help with release of said projects. sG does not have a large internal analytical department that it can utilize to predicate the answers to these and other relevant questions. This is where greater prominence throughout the whole community, as opposed to the veiled curtain approach maintained by staff, would be helpful in deciding proper resource contribution and direction. Going concurrently with the example mentioned above, servers should have easily digestible statistics released about player activity on a monthly basis, if possible. Game.me does contain server statistics, but they are not easily digestible or condensed. If there was a way to condense server info into monthly activity graphs and conglomerate it into a monthly post, this would bring more awareness to server population and performance to everyone.

We let CanadianBill stay on gmod for so long after multiple people came forward with valid complaints. Our CD started to look like a pissing contest at one point. Staff took a backseat role and refused to punish someone that was actually a nuisance on the server, not just for community members, but for the general population as well. Hell, when it came up that his admin was still active but he didn't pay, for about 3-4 months iirc, due to the forums downtime we had some months back, he was allowed to repurchase his admin - after losing it for a month due to staff finally taking action after numerous complaints came up - and continue being toxic and too heavy-handed with his admin powers. This is a great example of staff taking a "meh" or "someone else will take care of it" situation. Of course, I haven't personally be on our server in some time due to my own stuff going on IRL but the way the situation above was handled seemed sloppy and lazy. There are valid points in Destin's essay, but if you're playing stupid games, you tend to win stupid prizes. Talking shit or banter, or whatever else someone on the outside looking in, is not a big problem imo. Sure, some members have cliques that tend to monopolize conversation or activity in discord or servers, but we gotta remember that this is the internet. If this is your primary source for social interactions, fun, or other outlets, it may be time for you to step up and take action with these problems or find non-sG alternatives to getting your outlet fix. We need people here more than they need us. This is a business, service, or whatever you want to call it, at the end of the day. As a service, we live and die on our clients/customers, so if we aren't taking care of them, then we deserve to fall to communities who do cater to those needs. There's a fine line that needs to be found in today's gaming world, since so many of our clients have now moved on to other games or limited their interactions in the community to a few people they enjoy playing with. They are the hands that feed us, so why do we keep biting them?

I am never inconsiderate of new players. I have never in my time as SO, or before, lashed out against new people on the server. Like most people on war3, I actually help those that are new and get them to stay on the server. I slowly give information about the basics, and slowly give them information over multiple rounds as there is a lot of new information they need to soak in. In my experience with instruction IRL and war3, this is my most effective method. We regularly active war3 SO's are trying our best to help new people and keep the toxicity down. To find out the mute/gag shit. It's all on sourcebans. You are more than welcome to look at all the muting and gagging I've done since I've been SO. It's not a lot for me, tbh. If you people don't voice that you find something that you don't like about the server, there is nothing we can do to improve your stay. Have you said anything before about us using slap/mute/gag/etc before? No. Did I know that this was bothering people on the server? No. Now that it has come to my attention that it is bothering you, I'll tone down the "flexing my E-peen". Whenever I gag/mute someone for fun, I 100% of the time remove it. As people have said before, use the CD portion of forums to help us out. Like the work place, if you don't bring something up with people or their supervisors, how are we to know if we're doing something that you might not appreciate. Body language is a big thing, we don't have that here. We only have your voice or text. How humans communicate is both verbal and non-verbal IRL. We are limited in our capacity to effectively communicate through our means. I was not only talking about you complaining on the server and not doing anything about it. That is the war3 population in general. When I am on the server, I constantly try to pick things up on what people are saying that would be actually useful and could be implemented effectively. Have I seen any of that? Nope, because all you guys do is complain about things like maps and bugs that you yourselves don't bother posting about when you KNOW how to post them. On a type of server that we have, it is a two way street. If you guys would like to see things changed about the server that isn't just the culture, you HAVE to help us out. Not just the SO's and one or two regulars. We need the information when we're not around. If you're not going to voice complaints to two people who are extremely active on the improvement of all of our favorite server in sG, sorry but there's not much I can help you with. I understand I've gotten a little spry with the mute/gag recently with other SO's and regulars of the server. For you, I will tone that down to when I was a new SO. No more poking fun from me. No more fun.

    Beerman's 8-Ball Pool Tournament

oooooh shit boys we back! This time coming at you with a MiniClip 8 Ball Pool Tournament! 1. Show the fuck up. It's going to take place this Saturday at 530 pm(CST). Show the fuck up and we will make the bracket. Be there on time so we can make the bracket. Making the bracket in advanced didn't do any good because some people just didn't show up. 2. Make an account. I recommend doing this before you show up but you need to make a miniclip account. It's fucking easy. You can use facebook if you're weird like that but just make an account, they don't even verify with email, and boom you can now play with other searchable people. https://www.miniclip.com/games/8-ball-pool-multiplayer/en/ This also has crossplatform functionality from the app apparently. I'll test and double check 3. The Rules We are just going to play with the default settings and default pool cue. There are other pool cues that can increase your game or time allowed to take a shot. None of that. That's cheating. The game already allows a guide that shows you where the fuck the ball is going so you don't need to spend money on an upgraded pool cue. If you pool out a straight edge and put it on your monitor to help you out you're a fucking loser. It's pool. Sit back and play the game. This is best of 3. I'll have a losers bracket. 4. Prizes I bet you didn't even read anything else above this. You just want to know what the fuck the prizes will be. I haven't figured that out yet. Regardless, the winner of the tournament gets first pick, then 2nd place and so on. depending on prizes which will probably be two to be honest. Check the other posts in case we get prizes and I forget to update this. Maybe it'll be a badge. Maybe nothing. Maybe fuck yourself 8 dollars provided by @Bear A homemade MS Paint drawing of yourself or your forum avatar provided by @SpartanSakaro The address to my old dealer who would definitely sell you an 8-ball of coke provided by @Beerman Badges to everybody who plays, or just the top two winners (to be decided) provided by sG! Show up Saturday. Create an account. Play by the rules. This should be some stupid fun. Again the link is: https://www.miniclip.com/games/8-ball-pool-multiplayer/en/ BRACKET https://challonge.com/g2nq8pds @Sponsored is the Winner!! -Beerman also it just dawned at me that I made the beer can transparent for the forums, but we have themes that make it a dark background, potentially making it look even more stupid.

This is just another example of the casual toxicity this place is full of and is such a turnoff to newcomers. If you actually read my post you'd see that I did try and do something about it, but for some more context, as a new guy to the server I had enough trouble just trying to get a TS IP address out of someone. And when I did manage to ask someone higher up they just brushed me off. I didn't stop because I was "too much of a pussy", more so because I came to the conclusion that people didn't care. This may have been many many years ago, but personally I feel as if not much has changed since.

Not to sound like an asshole or anything, but I have never seen a legitimate complaint regarding any SOs or War3 players from yourself or any regulars in War3. That being said, I don't appreciate you calling two contributers to the War3 community assholes. Both of these guys do their job to make War3 a better place, and when you come in here and say that there are problems, while not ever reporting it makes me think twice about your integrity. Seems like you're just complaining to complain at this point. Neither of these fine people have an ego issue.

@Swed @Bear-Man-Thing hey look it's the two assholes who don't like to read and just spew shit out of their mouths like usual. Face has a plugin to look at the admin command log and second I was backing up and just giving an easy example of how people sometimes take things too far or are inconsiderate of new players or people not in the know. I was not attacking anyone or calling anyone out I was not throwing around names I was just giving examples to help elaborate on other peoples issues and concerns. I do try to fix things when I see them as a problem I just don't waste my breath or typing time to talk to either of you two because these are the kind of responses people in general get from both of you. I like both of you in general but BMT ( your newish nickname ) You have a ego problem and you bring it into the server all the time and so do you Swed. No one cares that your old fags around here no one cares about how big you E-peen is. This thread was people venting about frustrations and things that need to change and opinions of whats wrong with the clan as a whole and server by server issue. But nope look at your posts and see how little they contributed to any of the topics at hand or points already established.

Or have you decided the correct route to solving issues you have is complain and do nothing?

Things need to change that’s probably the big thing here. The problems is you can’t control people and their choices even behind a keyboard they have the same beliefs and ethics they do in real life at least I hope so. I think personally members of staff and the SO team need to pin down on people being toxic for no reason or being rude to new people. Multiple times I’ve had a new guy join War3 and regulars or even people in sG decide to troll him and he leaves and never comes back. If you want more people to come and join the community quit being dicks. Quit letting people that don’t even play on the servers decide who plays or joins anymore. Get staff that truly want to invest time and make servers better and not trying to stick to old ways and be cliquey and dicks to everyone. That’s just my opinion

Bulk replying cause this is my first time reading the thread since I posted it last night I'm gunna be 100% transparent here. This thread wasn't really meant to attack Sean or Beerman, they were literally just 2 of the most recent examples of the issues I brought up along side them. I also fucked up cause those quotes are from a PM and I didn't really ask for permission. I just want discussion and change. Your sentence after the Tl;dr just aligns with me so much lmao. Yea that's what I was referring to with the ""eks dee le trolls" and get rid of this roasting culture we've got going on" Cause fuck that man, I put too much time, effort, money, and care into this bitch. Realized it about 3 hours after getting day 1 staff at tW. See the Grayson post, but yea I agree that's why I brought up the communication and lack of counseling/guidance issue. I don't want the guy demoted over a fuckin badge lmao. I just want an environment on staff where someone can say "Hey I think you handled that wrong, giving them the badges is the right thing to do here." God no, just make it easier to JP people like console. I like how Ranks are, I just don't like how you either get JP'd or banned. I think adding a possibility of being demoted from Vet to L5 makes it easier to react when someone doesnt something kinda fucked up but not enough to be JP'd or banned, and I actually like how recruitment works besides the one month thing. I don't wanna directly rip off from another community but maybe something between recruit and regular member if you make it shorter? You're technically in the clan but it's still probationary position, counts toward L2, L3, etc. tenure reqs? As a non-member, on the other side, it seems unnecessarily long. Eh most of the 2nd page just looks to be pretty constructive discussion. I didn't realize how short my community culture section is, it's literally just the beerman example. I think I was mostly in a hurry just wanted to be done but it made it look more like a personal attack RIP

I do agree with this point within the community. I've already had multiple conversations with some friends within sG and staff members, and whilst I agree that the community is not dead, there is also no influx of new members comming in often. And reason for that is mainly due to sG being mainly a CSGO community, and other games capturing most of the casual gamers (fortnite etc). We still do have people that used to play in our servers want to come back , just the other day I saw someone in CD appeal a perm ban because he missed the community. In the end of the day, sG is different from most of the communities out there, and as much as I agree with most points that Destin made, and we do have room to improve, its not like sG is in a terrible place currently. Sure, we are not as popular as we were 2-3 years ago, our golden age, but that's because the game lost popularity. I do realize that HellsGamers aswell has maintained a solid population all around (checking their Game-me and Sourcebans) their servers maintains a solid 14-20 population on week days, I would say that we need to find a way to make our servers more populated, but the problem is no one knows how, and there is no real way to maintain the population. Something that I wished I saw more were more active staff in the frontrunner. Not just RO's and the Occasional advisor interacting with people, showing they are active, but people within Manager/JCS ranks being a bit more.. alive? I know Mimic is always in the shadows, and he is very active in the community behind the curtain, but at the same time, I only know that because when I was RO that is exactly how things were, but to those looking in, it just seems like they allow the community to slowly dwindle away. And I must ask aswell, Destin, given how you have said yourself - You've tried out three other communties prior to comming back to sG. If we are such a toxic community, and so unwelcoming, what made you come back? Why didn't you just stay where you were?

Oof. Do people not understand the glory of the complaint department? Have you not seen my frivolous complaints I've made about dumb, YET VALID, bullshit? Staff must take the CD seriously. It's the only serious place in sG. If you war3fags have a problem with an SO or other war3fag then use the complaint department. Going to face or a staff member and not seeing a result will be typical. Shit is done behind the scene. CD lists point and clear that shit was handled and what actions were taken. If you're too much of a pussy to reveal yourself to the accused use Private PMs to staff. This shit isn't hard people. @turbulance @Agent

I have complaints in the complaint department from the times I have had issues I go to Face if I have an issue or I go so a Staff member. Like I said I don't go after people in general unless they make it personal. I did not go after either of you as a SO BMT I called you and Swed out for bringing nothing to the table on this post and the way yall seem to have a ego when anyone tries to challenge anything you say or do. I did not call into check your quality as SO's I did not say you needed to lose SO I did not say you don't deserve what you have. This isn't about a no fun allowed I watch you guys slap each other all day and could not give a rats ass. To me it looked like you both didn't even read what I said or the points I was making you just barfed out a reply that made little to no sense in the context of this thread. @Sean sorry to hurt your feelings but if I want to call someone an asshole it's just gonna happen that's life no one here is going to curl up in bed tonight crying to themselves that I called them an asshole. Especially those two. My two cents was about SO's and staffers coming in using admin powers for no reason on random people or a player and laughing about it or doing it for the lols and how it can leave a bad impression on people. I had no pitch fork in my hand and neither did Agent he was just explaining his past experiences about how he TRIED and nothing ever happened and how I can relate to it and so can others. Again read what I actually wrote and put it into the context of the thread and what I have said previously countless times now. But then again I am glad to see everyone is still like the CD is the beginning and ending of solving issues within the clan. The whole damn point was...it isn't

real problem is probably not testing out other games often enough. I remember when people we're trying to get a tf2 server before it went f2p, the response was mostly "eh, were a a mod clan, we don't do well with vanilla gameplay". either way the only way for the clan to grow at this point would be to try and expand to other games and just hope to get lucky. but maybe thats just me.
